Just got my first panerai 111j and have never used a manual wind watch before, what would be right technique to get this watch started and how do i maintain it.

Wind it clockwise till it stops or you get nervous!
A good movement has a stop point, but these are Asian reps were dealing with.

On a Pam, you release the crown guard, then wind the crown clockwise about 30 turns. Pull the crown out and set the time. Push the crown back in and close the crown guard.
You have to try hard to over-wind the movement. You can just keep winding it until you get a noticeably higher level of resistance, then stop winding.
Wind it daily if wearing it daily, or if you just want to keep it running.
No need to keep it running all the time, no need to let it rest a lot.
Enjoy!

It's pretty impossible to overwind, you'll feel the resistance set in.

I always set the time before winding it, is that also OK or is there a reason for why you wind first and set the time after?

No problem either way - except the time you may lose while winding could make it a minute slow.

Good stuff, thanks for asking the question.
I just got my 111j as well yesterday.
I'm loving the heck out of it.

yea got mine a few days ago. reeeeeealy nice for 2 bills. i will post photos in trevors reviews. i agree with levelman. that is what i do as well. it is very hard to overwind. like anything in watch operation, don't force anything.
