Winding issue on Submariner

My Sub, almost a year old now, used to hand wind flawlessly - Now, after sitting unworn for several weeks/months, I went to hand wind it - It was smooth for the first 40 turns or so but then, when the stem was turned, it was like I was winding the entire rotor - The watch actually vibrated in my hand ajnd I could hear/feel a lot going on inside...Could I have simply overwound the thing or is there something more sinister at work here?

Thanks guys,

Mike

Do you typically handwind? Which sub and which movement? May help narrow things down a bit.

Sounds like the reversing gear apparently is sticking, letting the rotor unwind releasing and the power of the main spring. Seems more common on a21j movements.

I had exact same problem on a 2836-2. Removed, cleaned and lightly lubed the reversing gears fixer it right up. Whole movement probably should be serviced when things like that start happening but it was a pretty quick fix.

Thanks guys - Likely overwound is all - I will let the power completely deplete and report back...

You can't overwind these watches. Like GaryB said, if the reversing wheels are sticking, it will cause the rotor to spin. You can clean the wheels like he did, but you're probably due for a service. If it's an a21j, buy a new movement and plop it in there.

K. No overwind then. Thing is, and GaryB told me what he did - I am not comfortable opening it up, removing the movement, and oiling it...Is anything "bad" gonna happen if I do nothing?
