Guys,

I just got a tag carrera rep from Andrew, and when I wind it it doesn't tick. I have to shake it for a couple of seconds on then it begins to tick. Is this normal?

Appreciate the help.

You definitely should be able to manually wind it. Unfortunately, I know nothing about the Tags. If it's like most watches, when you pull out the crown, there should be 3 positions. First, it should have a screw-in crown, so un-screw it. Then, GENTLY pull out on the crown, the first click should be for winding. You should feel minor resistance when turning clockwise. Just wind it until you feel significant resistance. The second click should be for setting the date, and the last click for setting the time.

Here's a link to the Tag site, and the winding/date/time procedures (the Owner's Manual section on the right side of the page, PDF file) should be the same.

That should get you through it.

Thats exactly what I did, but the thing didn't tick...even after I screwed the crown back in. I shook it, and then it began to tick. I'll wait till it runs out of juice and try it again. Thanks for the help.

So correct me if I'm wrong...an automatic should keep ticking if I wear it everyday right? I've worn this watch for 3 days and it just ran out of juice? Is it busted?

It should continue winding when you wear it and move normally. So... if you wear it continuosly for 3 days, most likely it should still continue working on the 4th day.

Exactly, but I'm saying that it stopped after I wore it for 3 days straight, minus 10 hours that I sleep.

A normal auto watch should have power reserve exceeding 24 hours. The norm is 42 hours. Even if yours is Asian version, it should last more than 40 hours. If you continue shaking it and still doesn't move, I would say the watch is spoilt.

Ok...so If I shake and it moves it still good? Its still ticking, but I thought it was weird it stopped after 3 days of continuous wear. Sorry if I'm confusing, but the LV rep that I have with the same movement doesnt act like this carrera that I have.

Man, I'm getting confused (nothing new).

If you wear it during the day, it should keep running all night and most of the next day (minimum) without wearing it again. Lets say you wear it all of today, go out and get gassed tonight. You wake up tomorow morning and have a severe hangover. You go back to bed and sleep it off. You wake up about 2-3pm.....it should still be running.

Basically, if you wear it all day, take it off at night, put it back on the next day, take it off at night, repeat, you should never need to manually wind it. If you skip a day of wearing it, you'll probably have to wind it by the end of the day you didn't wear it. It would be odd that a watch winds ok automatically, but not manually, but I guess it could happen. I've got some that do have a short reserve. If I take it off around Midnight, it'll quit running around 3:00pm the next day if I don't wear it/wind it. The Pannies seem to have a much longer reserve then the Polexes', though, at least in my experience.

Some autos can't be manually wound. Example: Seiko's movement on Sports 5 watches. The watch will only work if you continue wearing it. Power reserve as I have mentioned previously is definitelly more than 24 hours.

Is that just a Seiko-thing, or are there others like that? I've never had one that couldn't be manually wound, but I've probably only had 1% (or less) of all the watch-types out there.

Actually, I DO have a quartz Navitimer and damn if I can figure out how to wind that thing.......has one HELL of a reserve, though!!!

How to wind a quartz movement? It's battery powered

Yeah... some Miyota 23/21 jewels has no hack function and can't be manually wound.
