Winding a PAM088

I'm new to Panerai and just bought a PAM088 rep. I wound it by opening the crown guard and winding the watch 40x with the crown in position 1 (all the way in). I felt no resistance at all, but the watch started running. The next morning it had stopped. I then tried winding the 40x watch with the crown guard closed. I felt much more resistance but the watch started running. I'm now waiting to see how long it runs.

Can someone tell me which method is correct? Thanks.

Open the CG lever and wind your movement, doing it with lever closed will put unnecessary pressure over the stem, crown and possibly winding gears.
You don't need to turn the crown 40 times like with a manual winding movement, just give it a few turns or shake it until the seconds hand starts to move, then wearing the watch during the day will auto-wind your movement

You should always open the crown guard lever to wind it manually, but "no resistance at all" does not sound correct.

Was this more or less a metaphor, or did you mean this literally? Even if the movement has been serviced and winds
extremely smooth, there should be the faintest hint of resistance and a very soft "winding sound" when you hold it
to your ear while winding.

If there is literally no resistance at all, the stem might not be in winding position because it is a fraction too short.

Thanks for the help on this. I've found that the "no resistance at all" only applies to the start of winding when the watch has stopped. After a few winds, I do feel resistance (with the crown guard unlocked).

Thanks.
