Why Gold-plated Make You Look Like A Fool, And How To Fix It

Hi Everyone,

Around 4 years ago I have bought myself a gold-plated blue dial submariner from a trusted dealer here. I was very happy and was wearing it with pride, and in my eyes there was absolutely nothing wrong with the watch. It passed a 100m water pressure test, it was running only +2/day, SEL were - after purchasing the original Rolex fat-springbars with 1.2mm end lugs - absolutely stunning, and I loved that watch. It was only when I walked into a private bank, that I was called out on my fake; and these people have only seen the watch from a distance of 5 meters. It ended up being in the drawer ever since.

Fast forward, 4 years later a lot has changed in my career and I finally found myself in the position to purchase a 18k gold daytona - a dream has come true. After my new watch finally arrived from Chrono24, I began to understand why people called me out on my fake Rolex before. The gold color is simply off - big time!

While the Daytona has a nice whitish gold, the gold-plated sub has a dark-yellowish gold. Unfortunately, the Daytona is in for a service right now but I still have two spare solid gold links that I can compare to the gold plated ones.

You will see, that the real gold links are just way brighter. While it may not be as obvious when you compare two links only, it is a major tell when comparing two watches.

I think I should let some photos speak for themselves.
In no particular order ... here some shots in different lightings on different backgrounds. If you can tell which one is the real and which one's the fake, other people will too.

I will document the fix here on RWI soon. I will remove the current gold plating, and go for a 14k plating in the hope that it's gonna be brighter than the Noob 18k one. Just need to wait for the galvanising equipment :) Once the color issues are fixed, I will be happy to wear this beautiful thing as my daily beater again.

And here, two older shots I have found in my photo stream.
See how "yellowish" the sub is as opposed to the almost white/greyish gold on the Daytona?

Preparing the acid bath just now to remove all gold plating from the sub :)

Really appreciate you posting about this bro. I have caught and released a few "gold" reps for the same reason you describe. Recently I found that BP factory's gold color suited my personal preference more than any of the others so I bought a few of them. They look much closer to your gen than any others I've had, so it's comforting to know that what I like also happens to be more like what the gen color is.

I'm still interested in what you are doing with the plating process since rep "gold" is somewhat of a, shall we say, vulnerable characteristic lol. I did put some protective squares on the lower links and clasp - I hate scratches and you really can't polish them out on these models.

Beautiful Daytona BTW!

The difference is quite big and clear compared to the pic of the gen Daytona. That looks so good.

Though I think you still have some career milestones to go so you can sit in the drivers side of that 458 Italia.

Gold is an alloy and will differ in color depending on the specific mix of metals used. Gold will also differ slightly in color depending on where it was mined. Rolex have their own 'recipe' for the gold used on their watches - they may even have several alloys they use depending on the watch model.
To get the same color gold you'd need to use the same alloy.
Shame the Daytona's in for a 'service', some wrist shots would have been nice to see.

Yeah Rolex makes their own 18kt gold and it’s impossible to color match with aftermarket replacement solid 18kt links and bezels etc. Rolex’s 18kt white gold is a lot whiter than standard 18kt white gold which is almost greyish with a hint of yellow. Rolex’s white gold almost looks like rhodium plating compared to normal white gold. I had an yellow 18kt Rolex 1680 years ago. That was before they smelted their own gold. It’s a totally different color compared to a new yellow gold Rolex.

Rolex Everose pink gold is absolutely gorgeous...I know they add a bit of platinum to the copper to give it a really bright rose color, and it is awesome...Any opinions on which of the factories are best at replicating the Everose color?

True.. VR factory use very yellow gold plated.

Small update! I have bought 10k, 14k, 18k and 24k gold playing solutions and will plate four links with each of them to see which gives the most accurate gold color ;)

I am still struggling with stripping off the gold paint .... all chemicals that I used so far, that should dissolve gold, didn’t work so I suspect there is no gold in this playing at all!

i am getting a few more, stronger acids and chlorine from the pool supplier in an hour! Will post a video regardless of whether it works or not!

It all came off in my home made acid bath!
the biggest question now is: since the whole link seems to be matte ... do I finish it first and plate it then, or vice versa?

Looks like your acid bath ate into the metal. Seems like you would finish it first then plate it. Otherwise would'nt that remove the plating ?

Good luck, look forward to seeing your results.

I don't know about Noob or other factory's gold plating color but ARF plating is spot on.

AlexanderDerGrosse : Do you mind sharing your mixtures for the home acid bath? I’m looking to remove the plating form a cheapie DateJust with the hopes of having a vintage stainless steel look. But I’m researching options as I am not sure that the gold plating can be entirely removed, especially with the links of a Jubilee or President bracelet.
Just curious what was successful and not successful in your experience. Thanks

So you basically own a full gold Daytona now (which unfortunately is not available now for pics due to service) and yet you care that much about the old incorrect gold Submariner thrown in the drawer 4 years ago that you go to such lenghts as to acid bathing it and trying several different platings? Weird.

What I hate are those private banks where they’re so rude they’ll call you out on your fake Rolex. That’s the main reason I bank online - it’s saved me a fortune in gen gold Rolex purchases.

Hey guys, question.
So I'm a big fan of the rose gold aquanaut - but the rose gold plating is keeping me from committing to buying it.
I know ZF make an incredible rep of it, and the colour looks very gen to my eyes.
But what is the level of quality gold plating from reps these days?

I had an old rose gold plated watch maybe 5 years ago (some cheap £40 Accurist) that I wore on the daily.
I found it again for reference and it's AWFUL. Literally almost no plating left, it looks like a mess of steel and faint slightly green rose gold hanging on for dear life.
Is gold plating the same or has it come a long way in quality since then do you think?
