In terms of elegance, I personally prefer the 299. It has a cleaner dial and bracelet. It also happens to be a true super rep. The 196 is not.

+1 for the 299 - The 196 has a much busier dial and on ss will look even busier and less attractive. Go simple and classic with the 299
