Where & what to buy: Main spring & balance wheel (assembly) for 3186 CHS (A 2824) repair

Hi,

I want to try myself in stripping down everything and building it up again. I know, tricky bit.h movement. But I am gonna do it.

Whilst regulating it, somehow main spring broke. I can wind it 10x then it spins/ starts from the beginning. If its not the mainspring, please advice. Is this the right one? https://www.ebay.de/itm/Complete-ba...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

That barrel assembly will work.

The balance assembly should work also. You may run into an issue using these aftermarket balance assemblies where they run great until you screw them down all the way, then they stop. The reason is on these 2824 CHS timebomb movements the balance bridge is slightly thicker where the screw goes and the balance assembly sits up a tad higher. The fix if you should need it is to put a very thin shim (~0.15mm) under the bridge near the screw. Sounds like a pain, I know but I've replaced several of the timebomb balances with aftermarkets and had to do this every time. There is no adjustment for end shake (balance staff fit in the jewell) on the 2836/24.

Shim is colored red for visibility. Shape it or find a thin small washer that will fit entirely under the bridge.

Here's a great video for the 2824. The CHS has some extra GMT bits. It's a good idea to take a pic every time you remove a part. Then you have your own reassembly guide.

Thanks a lot!! This is very helpful!! I would never ever have come to the conclusion that I need to use a shim... Is there any materials that shall not be used? Metals/ plastics? No need to glue or sth. just screw barell assembly and thats it or?

I am going to disassemble the movement completely, the video and your tip with taking photos is highly appreciated.

You could use plastic for a shim but getting it thin enough would cause it to fray around the edges and you end up with strings hanging. Metal is best, easily shaped. Dip it in alcohol and rub it clean when done.

Try fitting the aftermarket balance without a shim first, it may be OK. The balances come from different factories. I just included that in case you get stumped because it's happened to me on every one of those blue hairspring assemblies I've had to replace.
