I've been poking around casually and thinking about a gen Panerai.
When I try to think about what I want, I keep coming up with
  • 47mm
  • Black Dial
  • Sandwhich Dial
  • ideally seconds and/or date function too
I’d love a gmt but it doesn’t have to be and I’d also like to be in or around $5k. But mainly, I want to wait till I get a nice piece at a good price.

I think I do want some kind of secondary feature at least. Seconds, date, gmt or all. Considering I want 47 and secondary features, I’ve seen a few really good deals on a 372. Which now that I missed out on, I’m kicking myself.

I have a chance to grab a 312 in fantastic condition for <$4k (44mm). I can’t really find a deal that matches that online. How good of a deal is this (full set, triple box, excellent condition)? Should I hold out for a 47mm or would I be nuts to pass up this deal?

i know many of you have a lot of experience and exposure to Panerai in the gen world and appreciate any insight.

How are prices are a Panerai authorized dealer for a new watch? I know some watches go for less than retail... significantly less than retail. I’m just wondering if Panerai boutiques and dealers (like Rolex) are forced to charge retail or if you can get a good deal there?

Thank you. And I've looked but what I've noticed with most places online is that... 1 they tend to list flawless pieces for market value or higher. Everything listed is a safe queen or maybe a box queen. Barely saw any wear over its life. And pristine. Which is great but the price reflects it. Everything has no wear, no marks, no swirls or scratches.

I wouldn't mind trying to find one that was actually worn if I can get some bang for my buck. Think of it like a car. All these websites are like car dealers. They sell brand new or models a few years old that are in pristine condition and never even been polished.

Where are the used car lots?

And I guess that's what I'm asking. Am I better off looking for a worn used watch (like the used car lot)?

Do I want to look for the box queens?

Or will I get more bang for my buck at a Panerai AD?

Jomashop or Watchmaxx is usually 10%-15% or sometimes 20% cheaper than AD. That's because they sell gray market watches. Unfortunately, they don't always have all the models or series that an AD carries or can get. I got couple gens from Jomashop and I am very happy with my purchase.

Chrono24 or Bob's Watch is a good place for pre-loved watches.

well my suggestions would be jomashop or chrono24, but efajri pointed them out aready. And yes, jomashop lists everything under the sun at discount, but they may not have stock of what you want. Once I ordered something and got no response for over a month, so cancelled it and got it off amazon.
