I know this is none of my business and I Don't mean it as dis on our TD's,,,I know they take great risk to bring us the opportunity to have these great watches so with great risk should come great reward.....but I wonder what's the real mark up on our watches?
The reason I asked is because I have an acquaintance that I met through culinary school that happens to be Chinese and he's peculiar to say the least but I'm assuming old school,, and I'm also assuming there's a great divide amongst the older Chinese people and the far more liberal younger generation but when I told him about my watch purchases he refused to accept that I actually paid the amount that I claimed to,,,I mean it was awful, he literally didn't believe me and said it was ridiculous to him that I would suggest that I was charged that amount of money for a replica watch,,,and we're not talking off by ten or fifteen dollars we're talking hundreds....
I don't know what to think of him, he's a older highly respectable man, very serious kinda person,,you guys would've had to been there to see the shock and amusement on his face to think I actually was sending four hundred dollars and more for one watch. He made me feel like a fool or a liar!

I heard their profit was around $50.00 per watch...hardly worth the risk IMHO. Im glad they do it for us though!

Mark-up...

He most likely did not understand about the quality of some replicas. Look at it this way............ If I paid $1500.00 for a clone of a brand new Toyota Corolla. [The gen being $15,000.00 brand new] He would say you paid too much! That car is worth $150.00 !! That's how most folks are. Then they go home and turn on their Sony TVs [made in China now] and say, that's a Sony! That's why I paid good bucks for it. It's Japanese you know. And then answer their I-phone, 100% Chinese made! Its American you know. ............................ No sense talking to folks like that. .................no sense.......... Am hoping one day ALL the factories come back stateside. Like the good old days............

The question is: Is $50.00 profit a sale a good job in China? Would a comparable LEGAL sales job in China bring more profits than rep dealing?

I have spent some time in China and I think $50 is good money but not based on the punishment you will get for being caught.

I've often wondered this even in my short time in the rep game. I fully accept the fact that everyone has to make money and i hope the profit margin are good for the dealers and its worth the risk.

Profits in China........

I am staring at a $145.00 Ceramic Submariner [21j] made in china rep. I am now giving it a really good look. Now I am rubbing my thumb all over this watch. Looking it over real good. I realize that a lot of people from the factory, to the middleman, on down to the dealer made some bucks on this. How can someone, well anyone for that matter build a watch of this caliber with a working mechanical movement and build it for so little. Yeah, how??? Are we lucky or what?................An amazing product for so little, yes it is. I really think we are lucky.

No I must not have made myself clear,,,,, I told him about the quality and let him look at the watch.... I'm telling you he wasn't hearing what I was talking about... at all! Now I personally wouldn't like to think all of our dealers are living large for selling us watches.... like George in that Lamborghini! Its just one guy but if any of you guys would have been privy to that conversation you'd be thinking like me,,,,,, I mean it was very convincing!

It's disgusting to count money in somebody's wallet.

And don't give me crap for pointing out that just maybe our dealers are doing well for themselves Luth..... it makes me happy to think that just maybe they aren't facing the death penalty for nothing......I've questioned your motives in the past and I apologized don't assume I'm thinking it's bad if there making great money Luth in fact NOTHING would make me happier considering that I could be contributing to getting someone I like put in prison forever or killed.

Give it up. The older Chinese men are really stubborn and nothing you say can sway their own beliefs.

Good luck finding only a rep movement for under $100, look how much a clone 7750 or even 2824 movement retails for. It's true, sometimes the movement in the reps might be dirty, but still, most of the times you get a good one.
Your friend is confusing cheap quartz reps with our reps. For $200-$300 to get an automatic chronograph with AR coated sapphire, superlume and sometimes ceramic case it's incredible value for the money, not even the cheapest gens come even close at this price point.

Man you ain't kidding! Wow it was like talking to a tree.... he sure had me thinking that they literally have nothing in these things..... LoL,,,,,,, but I do hope with the risk they take that they do well...... the more I deal with Sead, the more I like him,,,, I'm really not to fond of the idea something could happen to him for going to find me a watch... I guess this thing with Mary just kinda brought it home....

Personally, if I buy a rep for $300, I don't care whether the dealer made $299 profit or $1 profit. I really don't.

I'm grateful that someone is willing to face the consequences of their actions to bring me that watch, but literally all I'm interested in is how much bang I get for my buck, and if the asking price looks good, I buy it.

^^^^^^ This

more profit on the lower end watches, and less on the higher end.
And this. It varies from not much to rather a lot.

Now I personally wouldn't like to think all of our dealers are living large for selling us watches....
So fecking what if they are? The retail mark up on watches at a jewellery store averages around 100% for stuff like Casio, Seiko, Diesel, Swatch etc and far higher on "no name" stuff so why shouldn't our dealers make good money? Hell, the jeweller isn't staring 20 years in a Chinese jail in the face either. I make between 80 and 300% on (gen*)watches I sell at markets, am I doing wrong? Heck I buy cartons of 100 Casio FW-91s from the Casio rep for AU$5.20 and get $19.95 for them. That's recommended wholesale and retail pricing. I don't think people not in retail have the faintest idea how large retail markups in fact are.

I'm not sure what the US equivalent of Super Cheap Auto is but it's probably Auto Mart or Auto Barn or the like, automotive stuff, oil, parts, seat covers, wheel trims, cell phone holders, stereos all that stuff in a "supermarket" like store. Their average markup is 400% on Chinese made stuff like interior accessories, lights, wheel trims, own brand tools all that blister packed shit to jazz up your car. Even on stuff like stereos, CB radios and brand name tools it's still 100%.

The guy you buy your weekly lid of Panama Red off probably makes 100 to 300% (depending how far up the chain you buy) for facing roughly the same jail term in a far better facility than the average Chinese jail, do you begrudge him?

Point is, it really doesn't matter what the markup is, if you want it you will buy it if you can afford it and if you can't afford it, tough shit that's the price. This applies to any product anywhere sold by anyone. Rep watches are no different.

*I don't sell reps, not worth the risk.

Nothing wrong asking the question about mark-ups. It's a natural question to ask. Any avid forum member who has never asked themselves this question to themselves is frankly a fibber.

However, that old Chinese man prolly knows little about high quality reps. I assume he simply calculated a $400 rep vs cost of labour. This same guy would no doubt have the same view on iPhones.
