I'm 23 years old and out of college 2 years with a pretty decent job. Which would be more believable to the average public for me to wear on a daily basis?
A red letter 1680 sub that looks like it's been passed down...you know, a little faded and scuffed
or
A brand new looking 16610 sub that's all nice and shiny

This questions been buggin' me all day as I try to decide my next rep. :D Thanks for all the help.

Let's see, a $20,000 watch or a $4000 watch?

Neither if you have to think about it.

Both will just scream fake :p I am pretty biased though. My first principle is to avoid Rolex.... Rolex will scream FAKE unless proven otherwise these days (especially for us in 20-30 yrs old range).

I say go with a TAG Link or Carerra with the 7750 if you want something that will match your age. Both of these gens can be purchased for around $2500. Also, they are twoof the best reps on the market.

My thoughts exactly a Tag is the most believable luxury watch, nobody questions those but if it must be Rolex then a 16610 is the way to go.

I love it, Tak!

It look like a B & R without the bulky square case.

lol, get whatever you want don't listen to anyone.

I'm 23 and in your same position, I've worn omega, panerai, iwc, and soon rolex to work and no one says a work.

The only thing they hassle me on is why I can't buy a nicer car if I have such a nice watch...

New age Sub.....shows that you are cool. If this type of job that, at your age, pays like six figures, I would belive that you bought it. Otherwise, nice gift from your Dad.

Pays six figure = getting genuine :p
Well... If you want a replica, I will stick to my no-Rolex policy.

I was thinking that his rep is so amazing that it would fool me......

Yes, six figures = genuine. That's a rough rule of thumb.

Honestly.. while I do agree with you Tak, I think age shouldn't be a part of it. I am 23 and could easily afford 3 gen rollies, but I would never want to spend 15k like that. On top of that, with the "keep up with the Jones'" mentaility that our world (well mainly America) posses these days, it's very believable for anyone to own a gen, along with a big credit card bill...

Wear what you like....... :)

@kinney: I agree with that part. Age should not really matter these days. My next door is only 21 and he has 6 figures in his bank account.

I could give the whole don't listen to everyone else speech, but it would be pointless as it doesn't matter how well you think you pull it off... you don't.

Get an Omega Seamaster or Planet Ocean, Tag Link, Tag Carrera, Tag Link Chrono. Even a Breitling would be more believable than a Rolex, seeing as they're readily available for 1-2k less than a Sub for many models. IWC is great as well, since the majority of your peeps wont know how much it costs. Get a WIS, and you'll be called out. Same with a VC Overseas, great watch but at more expensive than a Rolex. Unless you have a rich father, and everyone knows this, a Rolex is going to scream fake no matter what. I've had my share of them, and got tired of the questions. Save the Rolex for when you're 28-30, have a house, a nice car, and wear it with a suit.

My opinion is just that though, an opinion. Consider considering it though, as I'm 23, drive a BMW, and have a nice job and don't try to pull off anything over my Navi or SMP. All it will take is 1 person that isn't a WIS to see the Rolex, assume fake or ask, then every watch on your wrist will be viewed as fake. Why even give anyone else a question about it? Everyone knows what a Rolex costs, or a general idea anyways. If you get questioned about it you can either try to pull it off or admit it's a rep, that's your personal preference. The Rolex sign is nothing more than an obvious sharing of the fact that either you're loaded or like everyone else on this board...have a rich father/uncle somewhere. If they don't know what it costs, but recognize the name, the authenticity will go unnoticed.

Tough call man... tough call :p

I believe many will agree with no Rolex policy... It is pretty much depending on the environment you're in too.

You have nailed it on the head, my friend. Isn't the idea of getting a rep, so that you will have more cash for other things? So, you can fool the world that you have big cash wearing all kinds of different reps, then spend the $15k on something else that shows the world that you have cash....like a mink coat or a 1 year lease on a Lambo. Showing the acquisitions that your wealth allows.....that is what America is all about. And, dammit, I am proud to play that game!

LOL.... This just brings back sweet memories of my rep vs. gen battles with my old lady.

Just to add to my point that age and watch do not correlate, my roommate and good friend from college was shot in the eye with a paintball gun and received well over 500k in the insurance settlement. So first thing he did was buy a gen Sub and Yachtmaster.

He isn't in to fashion, nice cars, etc, but loved his watches. So he wore a t-shirt, jeans, sandals, etc with his Sub and YM and you know what, he didn't care if people thought it was fake, cause it wasn't

Now I know its a lot easier to have that mentality when you have a gen on your arm, but come on, by "pulling it off" what do you mean? You want random people you walk by to think its real? That should be the last thing you care about...

Basically what I am saying is you should wear whatever watch you feel comfortable with, cause when it comes down to it you would never even believe the types of people that own nice watches.... and maybe your just one of them......

At which point, get a Fortis or a Sinn, or even a decent Seiko. If you don't care about the brand, why have a replica?

I would go for a replica of something believable, and that's not Rolex, unless you work in an environment where nobody knows a Seiko from an Omega.

Now, a Planet Ocean could be believable, for some reason.

ps. If you're dead set on a Sub, get the modern. Don't let us convince you not to buy your dream rep. We'll be here for you if you get called out.
