I have a sub with a 2836-2 movement and every morning i find that seconds hand ( and the entire movement) is always stopped at the 3 second mark. the minute and hour hand location is always different so it's not hitting those. I have fully wound it multiple times and it doesn't help. Then as soon as I give it a couple shakes it starts right back up again and goes for however long. very random. anyone know what it could be?

Something rubbing. Check the hands...

I did. I don't know what it would be hitting. The crystal looks even on every side and even when the other hands are opposite of the second hand it still stops in the same exact spot every time

Try loosening the movement tabs and shifting the movement slightly.

The second hand is rubbing against the crystal at every pass of the 3 second mark. At some point the power in the spring is wound down sufficiently to make the second hand get stuck against the crystal. This is why when you shake it, increasing the power to the watch that it will continue for a while. If you know what you are doing, you could open up the back and reseat the second hand. This should sort out the problem. That's only if Teddy's suggestion doesnt work. His suggestion would be the easiest less intrusive route.

I have to order a case opener. I tried a rubber ball but its just on there too tight. i'm still not convinced its a problem with the hand hitting the crystal though. I decided to try something last night and leave the watch crystal side up, rather than on its side crown side up. when I got up this morning, it was still running! very strange considering whenever I leave it crown up it always stops.

could it be a problem with the movement? I notice when I'm screwing in the crown it makes a clicking sound at a certain point

Looks to me your experiment has confirmed what Teddy has told you when he suggested that you try loosening the movement tabs and shifting the movement slightly. Because the movement is not seated properly the second hand will be moving away from and into the crystal causing the watch to consistently stop at that point.

It could also be some debris/gunk in one of the centre seconds wheel's teeth. It would require removing the auto block to see it but it's not hard assuming you have the correct screwdriver and tweezers.

Definitely try the above options first. As stated earlier, they are far less intrusive and more likely to be the issue.

That said, if you have no joy and you're not sure how to check the centre wheel, give me a shout and I'll explain it.

The overwhelming likelihood is that the seconds hand is touching the crystal. Its a pretty common issue, as seconds hands are a bitch to put on and if they're not seated properly can easily touch a crystal.

I'd say its worth taking a shot at repairing yourself, because the fix could be very easy -- remove the movement, and just try to press the seconds hand down gently and ensure its seated on the pinion, then put the mov't back in and stitch it up.
