What you'll find now is modified 2836 ETA movements, since the 2893 PAM GMTs are a thing of the past.

The modified 2836s are good movements, the GMT hand just doesn't jump in 1 hr increments like the 2893 movement.

Agree, however since 2836 movt's that come in rep GMT watches are heavily modified in Asia, they are more prone to failures. This plus when compared to 2893 mov'ts they feel 'crude' and rough to operate, if you ever owned both 2893 and 2863 GMT watches you'd know where I'm coming from. There are many 2863 based 029 and 063 GMT reps that failed in the past, hence the popularity of the real GMT mov't powered reps like ETA-2893 PAM029/063. Ziggy was one of the watchmakers who frowns upon the GMT modified ETA-2836, for example.

ETA-2892 mov't is one of the best and most realiable automatic mov'ts produced by ETA. Its base platform is designed as modular and was also used to build mov'ts with extra complications, like 2892-A2 (with Soprod 9040 PR reserve) module 2893 (GMT function) and 2894 (chronograph).
On the other hand, ETA-2863 is very basic automatic mov't, that's all.

I personaly would steer away from cheaper ones with 2836 mov't in them, and concentrate my efforts to find used pre-owned one with the 2893-A2.

after you get an answer by babola you can close the thread as well...his knowledge is great, especially when it comes to Panerai watches...

he said everything that could be said about this model (there is as well a cheap Asian 21j version of this rep - great value for the money)..

How is the reliabliity of the 21J compared to th 2893? I know thwe standard 2813 DG is a work horese adn cheap, but is the GMT hand independent? HOw is the rest of the construction of the watch? Is it a good quality face/ hands?

I was browsing the new Silix site, & they show several 2893 GMT's.

http://www.silix-prime.com/pans027-p-1550.html

Since the site is new, I don't know if they're just old pics/descriptions carried over from the old site or not?

Those are long gone...some 2 years now to be precise. Sillix is notorious for misprinting and not updating the pieces he advertises.

Also, lack of any mov't pics isn't a good sign, so steer away... 8)

Sorry, just a small clarification to what was said above

The GMT modded 2836 has a GMT hand that DOES JUMP in 1 hour increments.

I actually think it feels quite good in my hands. The date flips completely and crisply at midnight like any good ETA movement. The winding is smooth like in my 2892 movements and the reliability has been good in the year that I've owned it.

I think the main issue you will find with the 2836 based GMT 029 is the accuracy of the bezel markings. Otherwise I like mine alot.

I just wrote a buyer reference for this watch - can anyone add any sources to it?

OK i am going to get the 029 b from Hont. does any one have the eta clone in their 029? I have one in my DSN 088. I have heard that the main concern is setting the hour to sync with GMT hand. It is best to set on the hour. Of those problems with the 2836 with GMT module, how many have been Asis ETA clones VS the supposid genuine ETA?
