What is the best way to paint the vintage Seamaster 300 hands

I have the ubiquitous chrome coloured seconds hand on the vintage 300. It is supposed to be white. What is the best way to paint this without painting over the lume on the hands? I want to explore the elcheapo option of painting it first before I decide to go to ofrei and pick up a 2813 hand that is already white, but I run the risk of the lume not matching.

To look smooth and clean I would sand and spray it. I can't think of a way that would save the lume and still look good though (without reluming).

such fine objects would be hard to sand I imagine but I also imagine it has been done before!
