I'm still learning about PAMs, as witnessed by my posts, and I need some help understanding with what members describe as "a thin crown guard". Could someone please explain? Thanks.

Do you mean thin crown or crown guard?

As for the crown itself being too thin, some models have really thick crowns and the rep manufacturers tend to use the same ones all over. This creates a problem with a crown being a little too thin on a model that should have a thick crown. Sometimes people go a little overboard with this though. Not every PAM has the uber thick crown that people think they do. Many people just want the crown to be thick because a thin crown can scream fake. The very cheap replica Panerai usually come with crowns so thin that they can cut your finger.

Going by evildee's example, this is what the gen of that model looks like.

As you can see the crown on the rep is not that off from the gen crown. They are both about the same thickness. Some people look at the reps with out paying enough attention to the gen and it can get them in trouble.

Here are some pictures of a gen 111

As you can see there is a difference. The gen is thicker than the rep on this model. The best thing to do for crowns, is to take a look at the gen of the watch you are interested in and double check it against a picture of the rep. If there is a huge difference then you may want to stay away.

Now, for thin crown guards..... The only thing that I could guess would be people worried that the crown guard is not as beefy as the gen. To me this is still an issue of the crown more than the crown guard, but I can see the difference.

The reason some crowns are thinner in genuine is because they need more travel for the date. You'll see mostly automatics with dates on them having the thinner crowns.

I can actually say I never thought about that. I always noticed that the autos had thinner crowns, but never really put 2 and 2 together.

Thanks Roeod4. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain it. I do have a question for you. I'm considering Joshua's 176H series. I see you picked what looks like a 177H for your examples above. How would you rate his 177H or 176H? Thanks.

I think they are very nice reps for what they are. If you like them they go for it, but keep in mind that they have their flaws like all reps do. The H is the problem. The crowns are just not thick enough yet, for me anyway. I am hoping that one day we can all bug Davidsen to the point that he just can't take it anymore and will break down and make a 177h or 176h.

When it comes time for "finger cutter" thin, I mean Kate Moss thin crowns, isnt the Silex cheapee Pam the King of the thin crowns? I don't mind them at all as the only ones that know the difference are you Pam pros and I'll never meet you in public as you spend too much time here on RWI. :D

(Any one that wants to blow out their thin collection of unsightly thin crown Pams, give me a pm. )

Roeod4, I just bought Joshua's 176h. I agree with you about Davidsen, would love to have one of his. Too bad he doesn't make one. Let's get a list together of who would interested and see if Davidsen would do a custom group buy. Worth a shot?
