Newbie question and one I have searched for but can't find. I have just bought a PAM217 with swan neck from Andrew and wondered if anyone could tell me the giveaways. I keep hearing about recessed canon pin etc etc.

I would be interested if somone could tell me what to look for

Lume and cannon pin are almost universal giveaways. The cheap strap shipped w/ most reps doesn't help...

The pin on the crown guard is usually not finished correctly on many reps- On the 217 it's usualy slightly recessed, while it's perfectly flush on the gen.

Gens have two sided AR so the dials always lok so crisp and black in photos- In the flesh they kick back a blue/green reflection accoridng to the angle.

And of course one peek at the movement would be the easiest giveaway.

Could you go into a little more detail on the giveaways of the movement, assuming it's a swiss w/ swan neck. Is it just the overall finish of the movement or is it still very different mechanically? I've often wondered with the newer and better versions of the swan necks that are out what the major differences still are.

Thanks.

Well the newer Swan neck movements are really really good- But finish quality is still not nearly as good as the gen- The ruby's are set a little deeper on the gen and have a little more shiny surround-Gens have daggers, reps have needles. If you've handled a bunch of Pams and had a good look at the movements one glance at even the best rep and it's fairly obvious. The engraing on the back of the cae and the display back surround is deeper and crisper on gens- and of course they have actual serial #'s.

That said my Davidsen Fiddy fooled my Panerai owning friend, and my 111H fooled the watch sellers at my loval Omega dealer- They had only seen pictures of Panerais so my rep in person looked good enough to fool them- The $200 strap didn't hurt either.

Great info Aquaracer. Thanks for the details since it's something I've been thinking about a lot lately.

haha, thats so silly--cause i was wearing my 111H yesterday to the jeweler(an Omega Dealer) to get a valentines day gift for my fiancee; my sales woman says, " Oh My, your watch is huge! How do you pronounce that,? Paneerieee? --Sounds Exotic!!" I just smiled...." ah its a cheap piece of junk i bought from the little kiosk down the way." :) Im glad she knew more about diamonds than watches (I hope) --ck

Well yeah salespeople can be dopey- But my closest AD is a bigtime fancy place- And two of the salesguys there are real Watch guys- but you know how it is- i bought a few pricey watches there so why would they ever suspect I'm wearing a fake- only WE suspect it!

Get the 005 like me. Closed case back like the Gen, so it doesnt matter what you have running it. I wouldnt let anyone open to check. Only I know whats inside. Good Cannon pin, nice AR, superlume it next and I am good to go. Now open back Pams that is a different story. They need to have a close movement.
