here's a simple diagram of a basic watch movement.

Should help anyone easily understand how the watch functions.

i am no watch expert, but simplified:
Power is derived from the coiled spring in the mainspring barrel that transfers down the train of gears. The balance wheel controls how much power is slowly released, thus creating its "beat rate"

it's a pretty common setup - gears of course placed differently anywhere around the dial, otherwise, same function.

I think most people probably just want to know about the mainspring barrel, cannon pin and escape wheel.

What amazes me is that all those tiny precision parts in the old days would've been made by hand.

I can look at old pocket and fob watches and clocks for hours in museums.

Maybe I should get out more :)

I'm with ya! This is what still fascinates me about mechanical movements to this day.
