Dirk is first rate!

Thanks Enzo. I'll give it a few more days. Any experience with Dirk? His stuff looks nice too. What is nice about Walter is the huge selection of colors and styles though...

If I am not mistaken, Dirk made straps for Panerai in the early (preV?) days. He only accepts wire transfer and charges a bit for shipping. So what most people do (and Dirk advises) is you order 5-6 straps at least, keep what you want, and sell the rest. You can always find Dirk's on sale at the accessory corner on Paneristi. If you order from him, they come out to about $160 or so each with wire and shipping costs.
If you want a leather strap to go diving with, Dirk's sea water proof (SWP) straps are unquestionably the best. His buckles are also probably the best out there.
If I had to list my favorite strap makers, they'd be the following (not necessarily in order):
- Greg Stevens
- Bob "Ammo" straps
- Strap Works
- MF
- Dirk
- Older Mario Paci's
In terms of value, Bob, SMAT, Don and Paw Markers are very good.
Personally, I like
- anything that uses thick leather with no padding in between the two (or even one!) layers of leather
- plain keepers (no groove line near edges)
- nice buckles with thin, straight (spear style) tongue and no no tongue groove in buckle
