Let me preface this with I am a complete novice when it comes to doing any sort of “work” on watches. I put this together because I recently picked up my first watch on a bracelet and wanted to re-size/size it myself. I thought there would be a basic guide in this section but couldn’t find one. So made intention to create one once I figured out what to do. Also please feel free to advise, add or correct anything.
Tools
From my research I’ve found that there are 2 very basic tools required for this, a pin pusher and if the bracelet has screws a screwdriver, 1.40mm is good for most bracelet screws.
Pin pusher, there are 2 options:
Pin pusher device
Block, hammer and pin tool
After reading the preference of some professionals for the block and hammer approach I decided to go that route too. If you get a push device don’t skimp on one of the cheaper ones as the plastic ones break easily from what I read.
I also purchased a Bergeon 1.40mm screwdriver, a bit more expensive but again I read that it is best not to go for cheaper options, and I should hopefully get plenty of use out it.
Process
Place the strap into one of the sets of slots on the block to hold it securely in place. If you are working on a bracelet with screws make sure it is screw side up. Unscrew the screw from a link furthest away from the clasp followed by the next one. Once removed put the screws to one side securely, these are very easy to lose if they fall on the floor.
Flip the bracelet over so the pins are facing up and using the pin tool and hammer lightly tap the pin head until it comes out. Repeat process for the other pin. The block has holes to catch the pins as they drop out. Once the pins are removed you should be able to remove the bracelet link.
Reconnect the two ends of the bracelet by reversing the steps, connect the links, insert the pin and screw the screw back in. Repeat the process until you have the perfect size, you can of course remove more than one link at a time, just remove the appropriate screws and pins.
