Using a Ling Hui mainspring winder with not quite perfect results

I seem to be having a trainwreck of a time trying to wind this mainspring. It works up to a point, but when I go to release it from the winder, it flies all over the place. I'm new at using winders, and this is a cheap set. Is it my technique (or lack of?) or because the tool is cheap? Or both?

I think that spring is a goner. Luckily I see those movements for sale on eBay for under 20 bucks.
