Thoughts on a 212...

I sold all my reps earlier this year - swearing that it was genuines all the way from now on! But these high end Swiss 7750 212 reps are looking really nice.

What are people's thoughts on them? My regular dealer says he can source a proper ETA version, which is super tempting.

I'll be selling an unloved Oris TT1 chronograph to help finance this (and placate the wife). The Oris is a nicely built mid-range chrono (but boring!), will the 212 replica even come near to it, or will I be disappointed?

Thanks all,

simon.

if your Oris is unloved, then sell it. It is no use to keep something that u don't like. Better to use to finance other projects IMHO.

I would rather keep the genuine Oris TT1. It is an awesome watch with the Valjoux movement. Please post some pics of it.

The rep 212 is nice. But a rep is still a rep.

Of course the decision is ultimately up to you. However, the 212 rep even with the Swiss 7750 will never be a flyback chrono as it says on the dial, so it's still not very accurate as a rep in terms of function. Visually I guess it's probably pretty good. However, isn't this the watch that has a mineral crystal no matter what version and there was some discrepancy by dealers advertising it as sapphire? If I am wrong feel free to correct me. If you do get it, the Swiss 7750 will undoubtedly be more reliable than the asian, but it will still be installed by a replica factory, so dirt in the movement from the facility, incorrect installation, really bad timing, old movement with dry oil, etc. are still possibilities. If you are going to shell out for such an expensive movement I would budget the cost for somebody to take a look at it and make sure it is installed well, oiled, properly regulated, etc. For cheaper reps this might not be cost effective but for the cost of the Swiss 7750 based 212 it probably is in my opinion.

As to the Oris, if you are not wearing it what good is it doing in your collection? Oris watches are getting very popular, but I still don't see it as something that will appreciate in value, which to me would be the only reason to hang on to a watch you don't wear. Unless it's a family hierloom or has some personal significance I guess. Why not sell it and see what you can get? At least then you will know your budget. Maybe you can get enough for the 212 and some flowers for the wife. That will probably placate her even more. :D :D

I think there's a project going on creating Sapphire Crystal for 212.

Thanks for all your comments guys.

I've had two Luminor reps in the past - a 51 and a 60. The quality of the case was really good, but both used a dodgy Asian 7750. I guess I was hoping that an ETA 7750 would be worry free, but if it's being shoved in that case by a pair of grubby hands in some horrible dingy factory, maybe not!

However, I love the look of the 212, so I think I might treat myself and get its innards properly cleaned. Maybe even shell out on a relume...

I'll keep you updated with my progress. If any UK people fancy an Oris TT1 chronograph, drop me a line!

All I can add is that I have just taken delivery of a new swiss7750 decorated rotor model 212 and have looked inside at the moment and there are no signs of 'grubby'! finger marks nor is there any dust particles etc. The movement will be sent to my local watch guy for lubing but it works and looks superb.

The mineral glass does not bother me as I'm not going to be servicing my car or anything stupid like that while wearing it. I have tried marking a mineral crystal and in my experince it is not easy so I do have to wonder what others have done to damage theirs.

The price is not cheap and as said, the flyback functions does not work( that said if the rep factories can modify the 7750 to work a Daytona then adding a flybkck moving should be a peice of piss if they chose to do it!) but it is a beautiful timepeice and worth the few hundred dollars it would cost you.

The choice is yours at the end of the day and you have to justify in your own mind the importance of looks, performance, longevity etc.

Good luck with your decision!!

there must be diff. grades of mineral crystal cuz i took that broken peice i had from my 212 that exploded and i did the scratch test again. i put alot of force into trying to scracth it wit a very sharp knife. = barely left any mark, only if u look in light, u can see it very finely

Just got my 212 swiss from Josh, I must say this watch looks damn sweet. Didn't know why I did not pick it up in the first place. This watch is not perfect, it has its flaws, the numerals and dial markers are way too thin, the chrono pushers are brushed, no serial numbers on back casing, etc... overall still pretty impressive.
