Thinking of getting a gen

I have been a lover of Panerai ever since I put the first one on. I have reps of the 005E, 029, 111H (in pieces and needs work), 113H (first gen I ever tried on and the one that inffected me with the virus), 183, 192 and 196. I am not really sure what I want to get. I am not really looking to spend more than about $5000 and new or used doesn't really matter to me as long as the watch is in good shape. I also don't really know if I want a manual or an auto, but I do know that I want a 44mm model.

So, my question you ladies and gentlemen is: What do you think I should get and where should I start looking? Any suggestions?

SHREVE?

Shreve is the only jewelry store i run into around the bay area that even carries the brand name.

I would say GO manual, it's a classic - and no date to worry about adjusting all the time. just pure simple time teller :D

I say go with a Historic (manual wind), Roe. They're classic and they're cheaper on the whole.

I've seen a nice 111G and a nice 176I for sale on 'Risti and WatchUSeek, respectively.

I'd hit up the well known gen forums and hunt for a good deal on a 2nd hand PAM, personally.

I own a PAM 74 and 162, both gens and once you get a PAM, you'll see the apparent differences that are aside aesthetic between the reps.

IMO, buy what speaks to you and what you know will give you some feeling besides resale value in XXX years or so.

Also, be sure to research the price lists of the various models because if you end up buying "grey market" or second hand, make sure you are armed with this information or you'll end up overpaying. Searching the completed listings on eBay will also help to determine the range in which a certain model will cost based on the amount it sold for. YMMV.

Lastly, if you decide to buy from an AD, note that most are hesitant to offer discounts on PAMs. The most I've seen is 13.375%, and that is here in NY. And it also doesn't hurt to come to the AD armed with cash. They may be sweeter on the discount.

Alot of people are talking about the price increase, it could be true.

So I snapped up a 112J just today just before April... compared it to my DSN reps and thought some of those guys were right about his PAMS cos they feel so gen like. But hey, I had to buy a gen. I believe as a Panerai head, I gotta have 1 gen at least.

Or 2 lol..

Anyways, as someone mentioned on his post, at the end of the day... you should buy whatever you think looks pleasant. But for $5000, I'm sure you could get alot of very very nice PAMS out there.

If I could afford one, I'd buy a used PAM 87 Sub. It's one heck of a watch with a T dial.

Good luck with your purchase!

I think I am probably going to get a gen of one I already have a rep for. The reps I have are of the PAMs I like best so it only seams right.

I will probably go with an 005, 111 or 113. With the 005 and 113 it doesn't really matter to me what series it is from, as long as it is in good shape. My only tough choice will come if I decide to go with the 111. I really like the sandwich dials, but I also really like the A-G series bridges as upossed to the CG bridges.

At any rate this is not something that is going to happen over night. I have medical bills to pay off first and then I am going to reward myself with a nice gen PAM......and maybe a few more rep PAMs too. Does anyone have info on the PAM 076 Blackseal rep?

Yep the manual winds are simple and classy...but this auto is starting to grow on me. If I was going to buy a Pannie this is what I strongly consider...best of luck in your search.

why did they screw up the bracelet? that is the first time i have seen that. it doesn't mimic the crown guard anymore so it doesn't continue the flow of the watch. it looks like something they took off of a different watch and just stuck it on there. :?

HK, sometimes I think they change things just for the sake of change and no other reason. I agree, the new bracelet is a step backward aesthetically. At least IMO, it is.

i understand allot of the panerai buyers don't care for the bracelet but i really like it. it mimics the shape of the cg and just looks cool to me and is very substantial in it's heft and it's manufacturing. a 111h is an extremely simple watch and i just had to have a bracelet so i could change from the straps to the bracelet and change the simpleness of the watch to one of great complication once you start looking at the bracelet and how it is made. i think it is cool. 8)

The only bracelet I like to wear on my larger watches is the oyster bracelet on a submariner. I agree with HK the Pan bracelet is well done however a Panerai just feels right with a nice strap. My wife insists I like Panerais BECAUSE of the cool straps available. She's more right than she knows.

Peace.
