Hi Everyone,

As I spent longer and longer on RWI I found myself going deeper and deeper below the surface. Most recently, I’ve become a frequent face in the Ali-Express Non-Watch thread and have made quite a few purchases, benefiting from others’ reviews of the products they’ve purchased as I've gone.

In respect for that, and in an attempt to help other people in similar fashion, I’m going to start a new series of posts for my Ali Purchase Reviews called: The Good, The Bad, and The Dirty. Where I cover the good and bad aspects of a rep in terms of its gen likeness, as well as any QC issues that I may have encountered.

To kick off the series, I recently spent a chunk of my tax return on a duo of Louis Vuitton reps… So here we go!

----

The Good, The Bad, and The Dirty: Louis Vuitton Keepall 55 and Porte Documents Voyage GM

----

For some background, these bags were purchased through the Ali seller “Old Cobbler†for total purchase prices of:

$190 USD + $10 USD for the Keepall 55 hot-stamping the luggage tag

$240 USD + $10 USD for the PDV GM and hot-stamping the luggage tag

The bags also came with poorly put together dry bags (string stitching was coming off multiple places) and the PDV GM also came with a “Card of Authenticityâ€

----

The Good:

Alright, hitting on the gen likeness of the bags (yes, I’m doing them jointly because they are qualitatively indistinguishable); they are pretty damn astonishing. Leather trim dimensions, shape, and stitching are all spot-on. Hardware is well engraved, properly lustrous, and accurately sized.

The Bad:

As far as I can tell the rivets on the gen are slightly smaller than on the rep but we’re talking millimeters of discrepancy here. Additionally, the curvature of some of the exterior D-ring hardware is at slightly harsher angles. The biggest flaw that these bags have is that they are the Damier Graphite and leather… Gens of this style are only produced in canvas so it’s an instantaneous tell to anyone in the know. Furthermore, the printing of this pattern on leather as opposed to canvas leads to a somewhat noticeable decrease in resolution. I.E. the "Louis Vuitton"s printed in some of the squares of the pattern lack crispness, and are only readable from certain angles due to the reflective tendencies of the leather.

The Dirty:

In terms of execution and quality when received, these bags were more or less immaculate. There is one loop’s worth of stitching on the Keepall that is ever so slightly looser than the rest (you have to REALLY be looking for it). There was also very minor scuffing on an approximately 3 cm section of the leather trim on the underside of the Keepall. The hot-stamping for one of the bags also has a miniscule abnormality on the lower leg of the “M†but it is barely noticeable.

----

All in all, incredibly good buys and highly recommended. 9.5/10

Wow, this is a great review! Thank you for putting down the time and effort to do this. How is the padding in the laptop compartment in the PDV GM?

TBH, almost non-existent, it's essentially just double-ply canvas. I believe that is per-gen-spec however. If you're concerned about the bag being roughly handled and/or the laptop inside being juggled about it would probably be worth it to get a cheapo foam sleeve to keep in the bag as well (There's enough clearance that you could fit it pretty easily).

Yes, good review!
Not sure what you mean, isn't the rep body also canvas not leather and the trim leather as per gen?

Also received my Keepall 55 from the "Old Cobbler" last thursday and agree - good quality
and value for money.

Delivery was also fast by DHL.

One notable dissapointment and a few niggles, probably irrelavent.

The LV logo on the DG canvas squares was not at all sharp a bit blurry in fact.
But on metalwork and leather the font was clear and sharp.

Niggles : I thought there was a "55" stamp under the leather of one end "D" tag, but not on mine.
Also a "country code" PH which I could not identify from LV sources.
The strap possibly has less adjustment holes than "gen" but neither of these are
particularly visible.

So, not bad value at all and I am currently waiting for LV DG Adjustable Organiser and Toiletry bag.

Excellent review OP. I have been using aliexpress for years and one thing lacking is reviews like this. Usually it's trial and error with who sells good quality etc.

I'll probably do that then, thanks!

Do you intend using these bags daily or only for travel?

On the fence atm.

Tbh I can't really pull off a LV as a daily in my current circumstance, but I have a meeting to go over a job offer package tomorrow that may very well change that.

Good luck! I hope everything works out for the best for you.

I'll probably go with the PDV GM and use it as my daily bag for university and as my carry-on when traveling.

Does the PDV keep it's shape well? Have you carried it with any items inside?

Keeps shape VERY well. Quite rigid.

Carried it with mobile mouse, headset, laptop, leather folio, and laptop charger in it.

Got my Keepall 55 delivered today from 'Old Cobbler' and here a few pics for you guys. I paid $190 and it was DHL'd to the UK.

The bag was packed up in a small box meaning that you may get crease marks. I'll show you those later.

After taking the bag out of the box, it comes in a yellow LV labelled cloth bag

Bag is packed flat so there will be some stretching of the leather

With the exception of the creases on the side, it looks like good quality. The leather is flimsy so the bag will not look like it does in the pics. I stuffed the bag with newspaper to give it a decent shape for the pics.

Hope you guys find this info of some use.

This isn't because of the leather. The gens look the same way. What you need for it to look "filled" or whatever is a base shaper. Google "Keepall base shaper".
I made one myself with a piece of plexiglass.

May I know if there's any sign of the creases healing? I mean are the creases permanent?

I bought a keepall 55 from old cobbler last year. It has been everywhere with me and has kept its shape pretty well. The padlock on mine is a bit better, sadly the only obvious exterior flaw on mine is the 55 stamp not being 100% straight. Annoys the hell out of me. Otherwise it's very good, it hasn't aged badly at all.

Forgot to say the creases on mine have got worse over time.
