Wow been scoping out this community for a few days and I'm already selling off my low to mid grade genuine vintage watches to buy reps.
I own a few inherited Pateks and an 18k Datejust but don't sport them around town too often because of fears of damage and/or somebody chopping my arm off with a machete to get my watch...not that 99.9999 of the folks in this cultural ghetto would even know what a PP is!
I am also philosophically down with the rep concept. Since Rolex has become such a gangsta pimp commoditiy, in the popular mind as well as Rolex SA's own vision, the rep is in many ways the more authentic gesture.
Aside from the stick it to the man notion, this seems a lot more FUN than gens. The aesthetics are there but the bogus snob appeal of the gen watch scene is not. Here, the "snobbery" is more about DIY mods and a quest for rep excellence that has nothing to do with multi k$ conspicuous consumption.
I never even thought about buying a gen Sea Dweller but I am real intrigued by the reps. Same with IWC....not ready to sell my Volvo and buy a gen but I can peel off two bills for a rep Ingenieur, no sweat.
Man, those TAG reps are looking mighty seductive also. Gotta get me a Carrera Automatic pronto.
I usually wear a low-key vintage Eternamatic as a beater but now I'm looking to PIMP MY WRIST.
This place is gonna be a dangerous influence on my mind. Looking forward to it.
