Lately for some strange reason I've been on a Seiko kick. Currently I own two Seiko's and one of them is a Seiko 5 Automatic which is famous for the FF mod.

This particular watch has the 7S36B 23 jewel automatic movement in it.

Most already know this known fact but for those who don't, the interesting feature about this watch is that you cannot manually wind it, at all. Seiko patented what they call the Magic Lever System.

No manual winding capabilities. The keyless is almost non-existant, only a clutch and a quick-set pinion for the day and date. Pretty unique eh?

Below is a close-up of the keyless, just a clutch and quickset pinion.

Here is pic of the of the movement with the Magic Lever.

Here is a chart that shows how the watch winds itself with the lever. Just look at the picture  The lever acts similar to that of a train.

Welp, I think this watch is a lotta bang for da buck. So for anyone considering buying one of these just remember when you get it and try to manually wind it, you can't.

great pictures! I have an automatic with no manual wind too, except it's a rep. I've been wondering why it doesnt manually wind. Im guessing its probably not because I have a seiko movement.

And with Seiko's selfwinding mechanism, I wonder how many Swiss watchmakers got their butts kicked for not having thought of it first! It is a flawless system which works all the time, every time. Rock solid, simple to a fault and reliable beyond belief. Seiko won many awards for this design and rightfully so.

Yep it's a great design and probably a lot less issues with keyless problems too. I think more Asian watches have this style now, but Seiko patented it.

I'm not very fond of the Seiko non-manual winding. I've owned one since the late 70's and used to wear it daily for years. It's fine if you keep it on but now that I rotate and pick it up from a dead stop, it to often quits during the first couple hours of wearing it. So now it just sits in the watch box. And, it's been serviced so that's not the problem. Being retired maybe is....

I wouldnt let that stop you from getting one. The instructions explicitly says to wear it for 8 hours initially to get it going. So far I've had no issues with mine with regard to it running after sitting for a week or so.

My grandfather passed away in '98. This was his Seiko 5:

At a rough guess, I'd say it's 35+ years old and been under more car bonnets (hoods) than you can possibly imagine. Never been serviced or oiled and, yet, with a gentle shake she comes alive and runs like a trooper.

This is, by far, the most treasured watch in my collection. I would not swap this watch for any in the world. To me this is priceless.

I love watches like this - true 'value' is what it means to you.

Great thread btw, really informative - I'm loving my FFF!

Solution = watch winder. :)

Problem solved.

I have ten Seiko's....mainly divers....but also two Yobokies FFF mods....I rotate daily on my winders and have no issues with them at all.

The older Seiko's look great and BB's 35 yr old with no service and still running, that's amazing.

I took the bracelet off and replaced it with one of the sailcloth straps.

It looks great Cy, a solid watch you have there. If my grandads is anything to go by the watch will out last you.

That sounds all wrong doesn't it.

I'm sure you know what I mean though.......these movements last forever.
