So I was talking with a fellow member the other day and he told me he was having trouble getting the crown to push back in after setting the time on his 111. After discussing it further, I realized he was trying to push it in by hand after setting the time.

I told him that wind my watch, then pull it out and set the time, then close the crown guard lock and it pushes it back in for me. Well he thought that was just crazy, he said I am going to scratch it all up and mess up the crown.

So, I am not Panerai expert, but is this not how everyone else closes their crown as well? I mean that is what its made for correct....... :mellow:

I close mine by pushing it with my fingers, then closing the cg. Less pressure on the crown means less wear, so the cg will stay tight. You dont want it to start flipping open on you.

I close the crown guard lever... just because I am afraid of putting unequal pressure on the crown... i have had my 111H for a year now and have done this everytime.... but then i wind the watch frequently, even when not wearing it and do that by not even lifting the crown lever...

Agreed with the lever part, right? Cause I have to agree with spdshft on the closing the crown guard part. The lever is right in the middle of the crown and applies pressure evenly to close it..

When setting mine in push the crown in with my fingers then close the lever. I wind it without opening the lever.

I push it in by hand. I hold the watch in my hand CG up, and with one index finger from each hand pull down at the same time. Nice and even.

I think if you wind your watch with the lever closed you are griding the crown/lever, which is a good thing if you like your crowns loose and your watches non-water proof. In a watch, metal to metal action is never good.

On mine (s) you can't wind the crown with the lever closed. They close nice and tight. Major blisters would result. That is until the crown get grinded down after repeated assaults.

To each its own,

R

I just snap the lever shut after winding. Surely thats half the reason it's there?!

Guys, I’ve seen this question asked a few times over on the gen sites, and the answer from the PAM nuts is always the following;

OPEN the lever before winding, and ALWAYS push the crown in BY HAND, not with the lever. Leaving the lever down while winding causes unnecessary wear, and pushing the crown in with the lever does not apply even pressure…although it certainly looks like it does…

Also, I am by no means an authority on these issues, but I’ve only got one PAM, and it’s a gen, and I got it new from an AD, and the Panerai guy that sold it to me explained everything as above…

Cheers!

This is not advisable as all you're doing is stressing the o-ring that seals it against water.

Agreed! It makes me cringe when I think about someone doing that.
