that own a PAM without CrownGuard...a Radiomir for example.
Always wondering how long it takes until the screw -down -crown breakes down....i mean how long until the threads give up and rip out ? - from daily winding up.
does anyone have ( unpleasent ) experiences ?
please share !!

thanks

enzo has posted on this somewhere. It helps to push the stem in, then screw counter-clockwise FIRST until the thread is engaged, then screw down clockwise as per normal.

I try not to wear mine too much and treat it carefully (231).

I work a lot on the threads. Enzo's suggestion is correct. To tighten it CCW is not to engage the thread but to allow the thread to match the right position and alignment first. Sometime to turn slowly for 1-3 turns will work the same to make sure the thread engage correctly. For normal standard thread it will work by turning CW. If you can turn it in smoothly, the thread engage correctly. Once it goes all the length, don't tight it too strong. Such a small thread cannot stand high twisting torque from human hand. Just feel tight enough, it should be ok. If you thread it in correctly, principlly, the thread will never be stripped and should stay life time.

i sure understand...this is the case for a gen....a lot of times on reps....the steel is cheaper, and softer and the threads are not as well cut....i know that fine threads like that on a gen are being hardened...and its hard to strip them. Thats what always keeps me from buying my beloved Radiomir....

I have never had screw strip either, and maybe it is because I am very careful when winding and screwing it back in place. Having heard so many stories about stripping made me cautious, (a little lube helps too) so I think one has to be rather gentle with the Radiomir types.

thank you all for the info....
i used to be a industrial mechanic...cutting 1000's of threads myself, by hand and machine.

But...actually...i stripped one of an old rep Panny....and believe me, i was very carefull....it just came off, because i think the material was just soft.....

i gained a lot of trust in all you have written....and it helped so much....just bought a Radiomir 232 that came from Davidsen....so far...very careful....no stripped threads !!

thank you all again !!
