Tasmanian is the small island at the base of Australia’s east coast. 20 odd years ago the small batch single malt industry took off, today there are over 100 distilleries here.
Sullivans Cove has won the worlds best whiskey twice in the last decade and now their product is sold via ballot .
This has triggered lots of interest in tasmanian and Australian whiskey.
We now have some of the early batches that were laid down being bottled with vintages of 16, 18, 21 and 22 years old coming onto the market.
Sullivans cove is the go to maker for investment , bottles sell for twice as much the day after ballot. This bottle is the Old and Rare French oak cask batch HHO 600 50.1% . Bottles of this are on ebay for $4500 AUD, they were $1250 at the cellar door. . Have tasted this one and it is adorable . I live near the distillery and early on I could go taste then purchase , those days have gone .
The other main variety is Old and Rare American oak barrels which sold for $800 AUD , batch HHO 505 47.6%
The last for today is Hellyers Road 21 year old American Oak at a robust 62.4% alcohol. Drinks beautifully even though is it cask strength. $1350 from the cellar door.
