Swiss ETA 2842 In BR01-92 Broken - where to buy another?

Hi

I recently bought a Bell & Ross BR01-92 from Angus at PureTime.

It kept beautiful time and a great rep - very close IMHO.

My wife liked it SO MUCH she wore it out for a jog. She came back sweating and my BR was steaming with condensation!

I was able to disassemble and dry it out using bag of rice, etc.

Now it runs sporadically after keeping poor time :-(

It's timekeeping was with about 8 sec/ day.

I took it to my rep friendly watch smith who I have known for 20 years. He said that the movement was exhibiting signs of rust. I asked him about the quality and he said it was a genuine ETA movement - 2842. When I took the movement out of the case, the rotor had Swatch overprinted in it - do you think it really is gen?

I paid +$100 on the watch price for Swiss movement.

Can I buy a new movement from somewhere? Who would you guys recommend and approx cost?

Thanks!

Ebay, otto friel or cousins in the uk or the board if your lucky :) Swatch bought / own the eta brand btw though i have never seen one with their logo on a movement.

I think you mean 2824..and if you do it is completely fixable, probabaly for less than a new ETA 2824 cost...just let us know where you live and we can direct you to a member watchmaker.

My watchmaker said 2842 and I thought he might have got it wrong so I searched on 2842 and found a reference to a BR01-92, so I assumed that he must have accurately described the movement to me.

Also from other research it appears that an ETA 2842 is a current movement.

Does anyone else have a PureTime BR01 that can confirm the movement?

Shamelessly borrowed from Swatch Collectors Forum:

ETA 2842, 11.5 ligne, 23 jewels, Kif shock protection, 21.6kBPH auto used in cheaper Swatch automatic watches.
Swatch makes 2 versions of automatic movements for Irony watches.
They make a special one for skeleton swatch and for closed dial watches.

Eta makes the Eta 2841-1 for skeleton Swatches and watches with an open face. On these mechanisms there are more gold elements and the movements are more open. Also the rotor is different and there are some holes in it. I do not know why.

The other movement is the ETA 2842. It is more closed and made for more then only Irony automatics. It is also used in Diaphane automatic watches.

I went to Pure Time website and yes, the upgrade movement (+$100) is an ETA 2842

I live in Melbourne, Australia. Would be great to get it fixed. By the time I buy and ship a new movement and the pay for repair, it's likely going to be cheaper to just buy another watch?

My watch smith seems very convinced that the stem release is really stuffed.

Any board members know of a close by watch smith and if it's worth repairing? Or just get a new BR and keep the old one for parts?

I am having trouble locating a movement to replace my "swatch" eta 2842 movement in my BR01-92 that has died a couple of weeks after I received it from a TD.

Thanks for your suggestions but I could not locate a replacement 2842 movement on the bay or Ofrei.

I am happy to substitute the 2842 for a different movement (2824? 2836? Or even a Seagull manual wind) if it will fit and the BR stem will fit properly.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

I think you ought to do a little research. My guess is that a 2836-2 or a 2824-2 movement would be a direct swap and easier to find.

Seems like a 2842 is just a cheaper model of the same thing. All ETA and all the same size.

Thanks.

Replacing with these more robust? movements is fine by me, I was just unable to confirm which movement would be a direct swap.

Is a 2836-2 ETA movement going to fit and work inside a BR01-92 watch. Is the original winding stem from the eta 2842 movement going to fit into the 2836-2?

Or should I be looking for a 2824/2?

The 2842 stem will probably not work but since you'll be getting a new stem with your movement, it really doesn't matter.

I've found 2824 and 2836 movements to be interchangeable in every watch I've ever worked on. They are basically identical if you take the day mechanism off the 2836.

The 2836 dw just stands a little higher than the 2824 because of the day/date function. And, the dw's on the two movements are interchangeable.

You really can't go wrong buying the 2824-2 unless you have a Day function, which I'm sure you don't.

To my knowledge most all the 28XX movements have the same ligne size and hand size but the amount of jewels vary along with the height size.

O'Frei has a 17 jewel 2852 movement but I don't know if that's a new version of a 2842 or not.
