stripped thread in Rad case? HELP!

just received my 183H over a month ago. When I first put on the provided strap I realized it was difficult for one of the screws to engage with the case. I did get it in, but probably took an hour (not exaggerating), while the other three is literally ~2 minutes. I do realize there is a channel in each of the ends that the screw is suppose to anchor into, but one hole is giving me a really hard time.

I just received a new strap (from tootall: thanks!) however again I am having issues with this screw/case. I truly believe it is the case, and not the screw as the threads on the screw look the same as other 3. Should I try to send back to Davidsen? Is it worth this trouble? or should I try some type of loctite? which version of loctite (220?) Is this issue common/par for the course for reps? Suggestions?

Davidsen sent me some screws, but they were longer and shaped differently (these were fully threaded, whereas the original ones had no thread near the top 1/3 of the screw, clearly different and they didn't seem to work. I didn't want to try to hard with these other screws.

im actually working on my own 183 two of them acutlaly and both i had to drill them out and rethread properly and install thicker screws ,, now they hold great,, i have them sent out to be pvd now ,, for the record i have worked on about 4 genuine 183 and a gen 210 and the screws size for them is the same as i upgraded to ,, 1.4 mm i believe

so if u dont want to go through all the shipping stuff rethread them and put u some bigger screws in there

hope this helps

Joe,

Since lots of people seem to be having the same problem, including me, it sure would be nice if you could either put up an exact description of the screw and tap needed, or a link to where they can be found.

I'm sure it would be appreciated by many of us.

After looking at that tap, I'm not sure it would work The holes may not be deep enough for that type of tap. You may need the type that have the blunt end rather than pointed. (Don't know the proper name of them, but they are for cutting threads to the bottom of the hole)

Bottoming tap I believe, let me look at some of my machining catalogs. You could grind the tap flat, I have done it before in emergencies.

These guys have them. There apears to be 2 pitches.

Bottoming tap: 1-2 lead threads ground. Used for continuing to thread a blind hole close to the bottom of the hole. It's difficult to start threading a hole with this tap.

Sounds like you might need both types. One to start with and one to tap the bottom.
Now we just need to know where to get the proper screws and what thread they are.

Somebody (Joe)ought to buy a few in bulk and make up some packages of screws and proper tap(s). It could be a moneymaker.

interesting! I thought when no one responded, that this was a rare issue. "glad" to know there is a DIY way out of this. I did a lot of machining back in the day for grad school, but I don't have access to these machines anymore. I wouldn't feel that comfortable drilling into the case at an angle and such a small hole. we all know tapping small holes is not easy either, as breaking the tap is common.

I am going to try sending it back, but I am still interested in seeing this process complete with type of size/pitch tap and screws that would be needed.

thanks

for completeness, I communicated with DSN and he agreed to take a look, I sent it back to him (boy that was nerve wrecking) he replied, agreed case was stripped and sent me brand new one)... now I have it... happy again.... THANKS DSN.
