Strap advice, please--especially about 'ammo' straps

So I have a 243 in the mail and want another strap--not necessarily for it, but for the collection. I've long been eyeing 'ammo' straps, but they sure are expensive--especially Ted Su's straps. I realize you get what you pay for, but can anyone speak to how wonderful--or not--'ammo' straps are. In other words, are they worth paying twice as much as for a nice Gunny?

Also, I wrote Scot Savage an email and haven't heard back from him. Is he still in business? I have three of his straps and always felt there was good bang-for-the-buck with him.

Finally, I'm considering Toshi straps. Any comparative thoughts?

You mean THIS guy??! >> http://www.scotsavage.com/Scot Savage....."The Tye Dye Guy"
He makes straps??
If that's the guy, I sure as hell would want to see how his straps look like!!

And for other strapmakers..... have you tried contacting http://www.achstraps.com/ ??
What price segment are you thinking of? What's the limit?

'Ammo straps' are made form old military ammunition pouches, typically Swiss, French, or Swedish.. Take a look at Ted Su's stuff. It is, in my humble opinion, fabulous--and fabulously expensive. https://teddy-straps.3dcartstores.com/

Here are a couple of pics from his web site to give you an idea:

No, he is listed in our strap section under 'Savage'. Can't be the same guy! The one you found is, as you point out, unlikely to create beautiful straps in leather for Panerai!

There are plenty well made "Ammo" Straps out there !! I can think of at least 8 companies/guys who make them.
I think they call it that, because (real) Ammo-Straps are made from old vintage leather coming from old WWII Ammo bags.
There are many versions around i.e. swiss ammo strap, french ammo strap etc.

What pricerange are you looking at??

I'm thinking an absolute max. of $200. Ideally top out at $150ish.

Send PMs to both TooTall and Prime Straps. They might make some.
Also Donerix might have something vintage looking if not an actual ammo.

Aha!

One of the best guys for that is located literally in your city. He goes by the handle of Blue Radish.

He is on homage forum and is a really great guy. Google search Blue Radish Straps and check out his blog.

He stops by here every now and then. He has some parts for sale right now so a PM here will prob get through.

His straps fall into your price range perfectly.

Here is a shot of some yet dismantled and some dismantled ammo bags he has for his straps.

Did you decide on a maker and an ammo strap?

I did, actually. I ended up with three! One from Savage, with whom I have dealt in the past, and one from Ach because I took a fancy to a particluar one of his. The third is a NATO strap which I'm getting from Greg Stevens as a result of someone posting that picture of the Blaken Radiomir here. I loved the strap in the picture and Greg sells ones at $20 which appear to be identical--though none of the three straps has yet arrived. Will report back. Oddly, I did write to Blue Radish and thought we had settled on a strap, as a result of a recommendation from Frigpig, then he suddenly wasn't there anymore..... Dunno what happened.

That's great to hear. Savage does great work and is a fellow 100% handmade strap maker. It's great to hear he is still around.

Interetingly, Scot replied to my email, saying that he was not taking orders at the moment. He happened to have one I particularly admired made up, so I pounced. I don't know whether this means he is drifitng away from strap-making, or is perhaps so busy with making straps that he can't handle any more. I hope it is the latter. I have two of his straps and they are beautiful. I like to think that my next strap will be from you--and there will as surely be a next one as there will be death and taxes :)

That's too bad about Bloo. Not that it matters now but I'll find out what's what.
