Still have some newvbie questions

Hi guys, i'm new to the world of reps. i came from reddit and i've read up on all the intros and guides but i still have one last question. It might sound stupid so i apologize in advance.

Are reps usually waterproof? Specifically reps from more reputable factories like ZF, VSF etc. I won't actually use it for diving. I just want to be able to run it under a tap or spill a drink directly on it.

Before I would submerge any watch, rep or gen, underwater, I'd recommend going to a local watchsmith and do a quick waterproof test. For the peace of mind, imo, well worth the money & should be about $20 max.

But I generally don't expose any of my watches, except my Casioak, to the pool/sea.

I have never seen a rep that is guaranteed to be waterproof to 100 or whatever metres despite what it may say on the case. Replicas are generally made to look very good, work OK , and everything else is secondary. Some vendors do offer to make them waterproof for an additional fee, but as mentioned above, you would want to get this verified by a watchmaker.

If it was me and I needed something waterproof, I would buy a homage watch instead like a Steinhart or Squale which are guaranteed to be waterproof.

i continued reading up on the other newbie guides and i realised i missed one thread that says it's common for watches to not be waterproof. my bad!

with that out of the way, i have another question now. when you bring your rep to a watchsmith, do you tell them it's a rep or just not say anything? do watchsmiths generally react negatively when they know their customer has a rep? i think it might be pretty obvious because i assume nobody would bring their gen rolex or whatever high end watch to a local watchsmith for servicing

From experience I will never take my watches to a local watch smith again, I suggest you try contact one of the amazing watch smiths in the TD section

Most reps are water resistant not water proofed. Shouldn’t be a big deal if you wore and got a splash of water or light rain stuff like that.

Some will say they are ok and take the risk, some will be risk averse and not chance it.

I'd be part of the latter group and sooner pay the few quid for certainty than risk a ~a$500-$1000 rep.

But re watchsmiths, tbh I havent gone to one with a rep yet, for waterproofing, as I don't generally wear in the pool/sea, and while the stock reps I've bought have survived splashes and rain etc, I wouldnt risk prolonged submersion.

I will however try the advice on how to find a local watchsmith. I might just cook up a story about how I have a gen watch at home in a safe and I got a rep for daily use. At least that story is half true lol.

I’ve seen some posts that are waterproofed up to 10 atm and whatnot, but i wouldn’t go diving with it (as is not your intention anyway). I do wash my hands with it (crown closed!!) and occasional submersion and most survived well.

There's no such thing as water proof. There is water resistance which varies, just like it does in the Gen world. There are many high end watches which you would never jump in the water with. The same will apply to the reps. If you plan on using your watch for swimming etc, best to get a watch that's made for it. Subs, etc. You wouldn't buy a Chrono and use it for diving.
