Stem trimming and feel

I'm working on a datejust build, and have a 2824 fitted to a rep crown. I'm in the process of cutting the stem to fit the case. So far; I have measured and cut the stem a few times; going a little bit at a time. When the stem was at the length I thought was perfect; all the positions were working well, but I couldn't get the crown to engage the tube and screw on. I figured it was too long. So, I cut a little bit off, and now all positions work; however while I'm screwing the crown onto the tube, it's still engaged in the winding position. Is this just how it goes, or have I cut too short?

it sounds like you cut it a little too short....OR the clutch on your crown is not disengaging properly...either way it doesnt seem like it will cause problems....my black bay is like that...

I lean towards the clutch. Thanks for verifying that that could indeed be the problem. When it gets "compressed" is the clutch supposed to let the crown spin freely?
