Ordering a new watch just before you leave for two weeks of vacation in the Californian sun is the best way to ensure a joyous and triumphant return.
However, the sheer volume of opinion and sentiment over Straight-Six’s decision to buy the Steinhart Ocean Vintage Military, or OVM, almost torpedoed our departure. We simply didn’t want to leave the conversation.

Turns out that the OVM moved our readers to mount their soapboxes quicker than the Fool orders a martini in an empty bar. The conversation has been rich, vibrant, and downright educational, with one reader referring to the dial design as having entered the public domain following Rolex’s burying of it post-production of the 1,200 or so Military Submariners.

A minority of you believe this watch to be nothing more than a copy, a cheap way of capitalising on another brand’s seminal design. In other words, you see it as a fraud. Clearly, the OVM cannot be a fake since it does not purport to be a Rolex MilSub, but it’s obvious the dial/case/bezel design all flow from the aforementioned Rolex.

The clear majority, however, stand firm in stating it is an absolute pleasure that a brand can produce something that looks so good for so little money, ticking all the right technical spec boxes along the way. The core argument is that this watch is phenomenal to look at and deserves recognition for brilliantly, and democratically, resuscitating this long-gone design.

Besides, almost none of us could ever afford the Rolex MilSub, of which only some 120 are rumored to still exist. The irrelevant and unobtainable becomes relevant and accessible. Nice.

And since we posted, a large number of OVM owners have poured out of the digital woodwork voicing their enthusiasm for this wondrous little piece. Six stands firmly with them and to get us moving into the weekend full of gusto and unbridled joy, we thought we’d share some first pics of the OVM with you.
Six’s first impressions are that this piece punches far above it’s weight. While the case, bezel and crown finishing reveal this watch was produced down to a cost, the dial and hands are simply superb, with the former reveling in its textured surface while the latter are as mezmerising as you’d imagine they’d be.

The supplied steel bracelet looked and felt substantial but nothing more, and our original suggestion to ignore it and get the OVM onto sharp NATO strap stands. The bevelled sapphire crystal is also a treat, enjoying the blueish tinge of an anti-reflective treatment.

Most of all, the OVM has brought with it a sense of liberation and levity. It is a healthy reminder that fun and ownership pleasure can be found up and down the watch hierarchy and not just in the stuffy and oh-so parochial halls of the hallowed manufactures.

On a technical note, the lighting in our office wasn’t exactly ideal, meaning the patina lume looks yellowish rather than the soft eggshell colour it actually is. It’s clear a Talking Hands on the OVM is a must and it’s one you won’t want to miss given how much this piece has polarised the Fool and Six.
Enjoy the weekend, folks!

OVM = Ocean Vintage Military

In the last few months I have decided bring more definition to my humble collection and decided to get watches that do not have a day/date or date only. This is probably an effort to simplify the maintenance of my small collection or it may be due to just getting older.

As I was researching watches without any day or date, I stumbled upon images of the Rolex 5513/5517 Milsub. I found this piece to be a real looker and got hooked in but alas as I read more about the history of this timepiece it seems the chance of being able to get this timepiece sometime in the future, when I am more financially capable, is zero to none. The listed price on one selling the ‘Bay is at $90K, which if I did have that amount, I would much rather buy a house. Reference pic of the 5517 (taken from the web)

Just when I thought my bubble was burst, I went on research if there were any homages made of this particular timepiece or mods that can be done on a sub homage, so I can get my very own Milsub. I was surprised that there were a number of options, in varying price ranges, with varying movements, etc. Then I stumbled upon a familiar brand which we all know of, it was a Milsub homage within my reach the Steinhart Ocean Vintage Military. The following day I woke up earlier than usual and went to our friendly AD only to find out the last piece was sold a day before.

The hunt was on…and after a few leads and a few weeks later it has concluded which much thanks to Goatee who led me to one.

A preloved piece but now a “Milsub†of my own…and 3rd Steiny…

The OVM is 42mm w/o crown, a bit larger than the 5517 which is at 40mm. A lot my watches are 44mm, and it seems that the 42mm wears well on my 7.5 wrist. Another great thing for me about this watch is the bracelet it is well built with solid end links…the clincher is that the links are connected by screw pins which makes adjustments a breeze, not that I’m constantly resizing but in my opinion a nice feature.

The mix of polished and brushed finishes provides great contrast and gives added dimension. The grooves of the bezel make it easy to move and manipulate but still has a solid feel and no free play. All in all a well made piece.

The dial provides a worn look by simulating patina with the lume paint used and the details reflected like the encircled 1 which mirror the T marking on the 5517 which is supposed to indicate that the watch had tritium, of course the OVM uses Luminova. One oddity in the way they made the homage is that the dial reflect WR to 200 meters while the caseback says 300...well I guess you can consider it as a buffer

In order to get a bit more of the vintage feel, I have gone to Mang Andrew and had this done…

Drilled Lugs!

I know it may sound crazy to some but to me it gives it more character and makes straps changes a cinch.

I've been haunting the Steinhart website waiting for the preorders to open again since seeing it on WUS.

Just to let you know, I emailed yesterday and was told they have a fresh batch coming in right now and that even tho they have a massive backlog of orders there might be a few available.
------

Email:

we have recently received a new supply of OVM though we have not served all the pre-orders yet. That is why now is the good moment to place an order, this is currently the most popular of our watches and is usually sold out before we have time to set it free in the online shop.

Best regards,

I think Steinharts are great! Value wise and also looks and build wise.

I am wearing my Apollon Chrono as I came across this thread and as I type this post. It came with 3 dials(DLC, titanium and bronze)and and 1 strap. I have ordered 3 straps and the rubber dive bracelet from Steinhart and I have so much fun interchanging and combining everything!

I have been going back and forth between getting a modded/franken IWC 3717...or a Steinhart Navi-B Chrono. I am leaning towards the Steinhart Navi-B. I think it looks fantastic and having the satisfaction from the Apollon...I will most likely just get the Navi-B instead of the IWC 3717.

I actually never considered the OVM....until now! It's a great looking watch also.

Great write up and shots, ThinkBachs! Thanks....
