I use springbars a lot, both 24mm and 26mm. Especially if you regularly change your straps its practical.

the spring bar is screw-operated and not spring-operated, You can find them on aliexpress

These are what I use. They retain the look of the screw but make life infinitely easier for strap changes.

Can anyone explain how those spring screws function exactly? I'm confused.

Probably a dumb noob question but if you use spring bars in a threaded hole will that eventually wear down the threads?

I would be more concerned of breaking the screw off, that'll be a fun tap job!

I don't have a Panerai on tonight so I downloaded a stock picture and labeled it, but the way it works is the bottom part (A) would go into the threaded side of the lug and the faux screw head (B) would be inserted into the side where you would normally see the top of the screw. There is a little spring bar on either side and the actual center is thicker so it won't slide through either side. The center's thickness is roughly equal to the tube that you would see with a normal screw and tube setup. To remove you would simply use something long and then like a small screwdriver or pin tool and you push it in from the side with the screw head and it will just pop right out
