So exactly why are these 1950 crystals exploding?

It is a sure thing when it is not sapphire.... mineral crystals can not take the pressure at the curved area of the crystal at the bezel... it places a lot of stress on the crystal until it eventually shatters...

I think that some people are getting watches with mineral instead of sapphire.

Yes, mini-Fiddys have experienced these issues as well. AFAIK, none of the mini-Fiddys, 212s, 253s, etc, ever came with sapphire crystals...

if i remember that one correctly that gentleman was promptly introduced to the air marshall because they thought his watch was a bomb that malfunctioned. it was a bad deal.

Yea, that gentleman was me. I was flying Delta and sitting at a right hand side window seat in 1st class, when my fiddy dial, on my left wrist, popped all over the lady next to me on my left. She screamed and said something exploded and had glass pebbles all over her. A flight attendant came over very quickly and soon behind her was an air Marshall, who happened to be on-board. I was still trying to figure out what had happened and then saw the dial with jagged edges showing around the inside of the bezel and then remembered all of the stories on the forum of fiddy crystals exploding. God, I was embarrassed and stammered that it was my watch dial and I was even able to find a 1/2 inch chunk from the middle of the dial on the floor. After it all calmed down, everyone thought it was pretty bizarre and the lady thought it was pretty funny. It will be 2 years ago this next October. What a weird experience and I will never forget it. I ended up sending it to Vac for the full treatment and getting DSN hands and crystal. I had purchased it from Andrew and it was one of the "Ultimates that he sold for a while with incredible lume. Well when this happened he could no longer supply the "Ultimate" as a replacement and sent a real POS as a replacement (The case-back didn't have any threads and was just sitting in the case and the crystal was glass, along with reg rep-lume. All that for $345... + shipping ) and I got into a pissing match with him and ended up on the loosing end of it all.

i had almost forgot about it happening. i do remember the replacement with the bad case back now that you have mentioned it. it is a shame the dealer didn't take care of this for you in a proper manor. in this hobby we definitely live and learn who to deal with.

Buy a 40 mm pocket watch acrylic crystal from Ofrei...Perfect fit!!...Might scratch someday, but it can be easily buffed out, and it will only shatter if struck sharply with a ball peen hammer!! :lol: :lol:
