Setting dates on submariners

Hi everyone, I recently bought a few nice reps here from other members, and I was wondering does anyone else find it very difficult to set the dates on these movements. They all seem difficult. It works sometimes, not other times. Either I'm failing to get the thing pulled out the right amount, or they just don't like to turn? Any advice?

I have one sub and the date setting is ok, but I go about it very gently, it's still Chinese movements we're talking about. On other reps it's sometimes tricky and I have to get the right grip to set the date and sometimes it slips. Again, I try to be very gentle about it and strictly follow time/date setting best practice (i.e. set date only after setting time after 3 am or before 9pm, so usually around the 6 marker). Some movements feel grittier than others. But I'm no expert at all, mind you.

It can be a pain, and it varies a lot from watch to watch. As Feefo says, they're Chinese movements and the quality of assembly varies from one to the next. I have some that are real beauties and feel gen like, and others (like the 6542 GMT I'm wearing today) where I struggle to find the date set position, get it set, then the date changes when I think I've pressed the crown in to wind the watch or screw it back in. I have a VSF Sub which all functions really nicely except if I set the date using the date change crown position, it ends up low in the date window - but if I set the day before today, then use the time setting position to advance the hands till the date clicks over automatically, it's perfect.

Those are just a couple of examples to try and reassure you that no, you're not doing anything wrong - you just need to work out the quirks of your watches, and get used to them!

That's how I always do it partly because of alignment and partly because I don't want to risk the date to change at midday...

Ah, with all my watches I make sure the date clicks over when I set the time, because of what you mention there, but more importantly because I don't want to use the quick date change function if the watch is currently sitting between 10pm and 3am, as that can mess up the date change mech.
