SECOND broken 2824 keyless

For the second time, I have gotten a Seagull 2824 clone for use in a sterile Explorer-style project. And for the second time, I removed the stem correctly by hacking the movement and using a screwdriver to make sure I didn't press the stem release too deeply. And for the second time, the stem now just pops back in but the movement is dead--it won't retain the stem, and each time I reinsert it, rotating will advance or reverse the time 20-30 minutes, then it starts spinning freely.

What am I doing wrong? Is this just what happens with cheap POS knock-offs from China? Last time I spent hours trying to reassemble the keyless, and it never worked again anyway.

I'd appreciate any help!

Go sloooooooowly and soooooooooftly. While I depress 1/10th of a millimeter at time I push at the stem release ever so slightly, there is this micromillimeter when there is no resistance and it comes out. Have used pins, needles, screwdrivers - knock on wood, no problem so far. For ETA´s it´s the red screwdriver.

Are you sure you are re-inserting the stem correctly ? - it won't necessarily just slide back in, you sometimes need to give the crown half turns clockwise/counterclockwise whilst pushing gently on the crown.
If that doesn't help, then you've pushed the release button too hard, as Daywatch said it's the red handled screwdriver for ETA movements.

Guys, thanks to you all for the responses. Tripdog, on the one that broke today, I initially hit total resistance, so gave it a few half turns until it was free to move a little further in. Then I pushed, and the stem popped back down the way it has on my TC 2824 (without breaking, in the TC's case), but this appeared to destroy the keyless: the stem won't engage, and now just slides in and out freely.

I'm 99 percent sure I didn't depress the release too far. Used the red screwdriver, and didn't have any resistance pulling the stem out. I think whatever happened, happened on the way back in--I just can't understand why.

You've forced it on the entry... that's what's put the keyless out of whack. Time to look at tutorials on resetting keyless works...It's not difficult and it'll help you understand how they work, which means you'll stop screwing them up.

You have two movements to practice on, keep one aside till you can reset the keyless with ease - cause you will cause minor damage the first couple of times, then do the other one which goes in the watch.

Agree, and it is also the way specified by ETA.
Different stuff for the 21j and Miyotas, in that case time setting position is a must.
Anyway the clones accept gen spare parts, so even if you ****** it badly up you can still fix it.

apologies for being slightly off topic. Someone mentioned to the OP to look at some tutorials. I've found a few on my own for various movements that i've worked on like 6497/8's, 2824's, 2836's primarily, but always looking for more resources for movements i'm not familiar with if anyone has any good suggestions.

I absolutely HATE ETA. The keyless on them is shit. I have worked with tons of movements and only ETA gives me grief. I am constantly repairing keyless works on these. I also bought a brand new Gen Swiss ETA 2824 and 2836 from startime and both out of the box run like crap and need repair. No problems with Miyota, Seiko, 3135, SA3135 etc. Ugh. I have to fix another one right now. Just installed a nice crown tube and gen crown and then the keyless messes up on install and I did it by the book as usual and still ETA let's me down.

I think 90% of the problem is the crap die cast metal these reps are made of. The result is the keyless sticking. I cannibalized the keyless works from my Swiss because it runs like crap and put it in the clone and it works perfect now. Running zeros too. The secret is to push down on the lever super gently and slide the stem in. If it doesn't go in, turn it a bit and try again. Doesn't matter if the stem is in the time set position or the winding position. I've had it get hosed both ways. My big grief tonight was having to glue back the damn DWO. I figured I would try my new V4 TC date wheel and when I got it all back together dates 14 through didn't line up. It was then I realized that those date wheels are for 2824 and that has a different circumference. Ugh. Back apart again and put the rep one back on and it's now perfect with gen crown. Woohoo. Hard part over. Nice thing about the 2836 case for Noob Sub is that the crown tube sits in the middle of the case whereas the 3135 sits more towards the top and when you drill its very close to the edge but on the 2836 there is plenty of room. Tired now. Did 3 today. LOL.

Not to be a jerk, but it's probably safe to assume that a majority of the keyless issued are brought on by user error. I fix them quite often but I do not recall the last time I personally goofed one.

You just need to be very gently and with the 2824/36 I always remove with it set to hack/time set.

The funny thing is, I ALWAYS remove the stem in the winding position and I had never a problem with the keyless.
Most important thing is using a 1.00 screwdriver to push the release button. You can't push the button to deep with a 1.00 screw driver.
Turn the stem gently when you put it back in the movement.
