Scored a Gen Panerai Movement for my 5218-203A Build!!!;)

I was having a helluva time finding mounting tabs that would mate my DSN case to my 6497 pocket watch movement. So I did a tour of the local watchsmiths around my office during a lunch. The first two so-called watchsmiths turned me away almost instantly. But the third welcomed me in and worked with me to fix my problem. We got talking about the 6497 and he mentioned that he had an ETA on his bench missing the hour wheel. He offered it to me for $50!!!

Do any of you recall the Panerai 318 movement scandal?:

This is the movement Panerai put in the 318 by "mistake"

Now...Check out the movement I got for $50:

I put on a new H3 canon pinion set from Ofrei so for about $70 I have a "genuine" panerai movement for my build. Im halfway joking about the Gen part, but seriously it basically is gen right;)

Time for surgery:

You one lucky bastard.
Congrats....

I know, right???

When I read about Panerai putting those unfinished movements in the 318, I thought about buying a 318 from KW and making a franken-error 318. But the unfinished movements like the one above are pretty hard to find. Most available on the market are decorated.

I'm stoked about this find!!!:woot:

Great find! One has to have luck once in a while, and it pays off to meet people in person. QED

WTF - I followed your link and saw that. Our reps are better than that!
That below is a genuine PAM 318

Hillarious isn't it???

I updated my post above with the 318 pic so this makes more sense.

Crazy that Panerai thougth they could get away with that. Oh well, now I can claim a "gen" movement (joking)

Not so hard to find, but at the price you got it, almost totally impossible.
Congrat on the purchase and that awesome deal.

I have been digging and digging and seen hundreds of 6497s and found exactly one of the unfinished 6497s (rough edges, matte finish wheels, "seventeen 17 jewels" text, etc.)

Where have you seen these? I want more!!!

Have to put my thinking cap on to remember which brand of pocket watches made in late 80's-90's that had these movements in them. Stumbled across them doing the same thing years back when fgd first came out with his dials and looking for the correct movements and found the.

Let me know if you figure it out. I found a few brands, but the prices are far more than the movement is worth.
