Rolex brought me here. Now I made a purchase and they've lost a sale.

I'm sure the CEO of Rolex is moaning in agony as he reads this right now, just wailing in tears after a potential customer, who was willing to purchase a basic, blue DateJust 41mm from an AD, just lost a customer.

This is sarcasm for the inept.

The song-and-dance of getting a basic Rolex from an AD is just stupid. They are indirectly fueling the rep market because they do not care about the shady business practices of ADs.

I can wait six months. No problem. I can even wait a year. I don't mind sending the AD a text here and there to say what's up. Or pop in the store every few months to make small talk about things other than watches. But at this point, I've waited too long. It might be my zipcode (Manhattan). I'm guessing I'm not the only young buck who wants his first basic Rolex.

I already have a gen Panerai 359. And I love that watch. It has character; a tiny scratch on the lens after slamming it — hard — into a piece metal when I was in Barcelona. (As an aside, the crystal on those PAMs are indestructible). There are also other minor scuffs, but it still looks like a nice watch. People complement me on it all the time. And I love it.

But it's my every day. And I wanted something nicer to wear on dates and whatnot. So I went shopping for my first Rolex. That hasn't gone well.

And then I heard good things about reps on Reddit and found my way here. And honestly, I cannot tell the difference from some of the pics I've seen both here and on Reddit. Went through CTime, got a Clean DJ 41 in blue, just like I wanted, but got the fluted bezel and fancier bracelet (I would not have gotten this if I went to AD).

MSRP for a basic DJ is about $7800; with the bells and whistles, it's about $11K. If I wore either a DJ rep or gen around my social circle, no one would question its authenticity unless it looked really funny. So I decided to give reps a shot.

I was thinking about getting a Daytona, because I hear Clean has some of the best ones. But that might raise some eyebrows in my social circle; my AD, for instance, told me he's seen a total of 3 Daytona's in his store since he started working there. They are indeed crazy hard to come by. So if I got one, people would automatically assume I went gray market, where they go for about $25K. And I do not want raised eyebrows. As an aside, I'm sure I'll get the, "Who gives AF what people think whether your watch is rep or gen. If you're happy that's all that matters." I find you people very annoying. Everyone has a different pallet. And a lot of people don't want to wear something that looks phony. But to each their own, right?

TLDR: If the process of getting a gen Rolex was just a little easier — say, a six month wait — then I would have never come here. If I don't like what I get, oh well, a $500 lesson learned. I'm sure I can give it to my brother, who would be really happy with a quality rep.

Anyway. This is a great website. The info has been very useful. As have the older posts. And I'm thankful for it. Paid with Wise. Now I play the waiting game. Thanks.

welcome.
I got into this for exactly the same reason.
I wanted an Explorer 1 but I was disgusted by what I read...I did not even try

now I have two Exp1 39 from BP and Clean 😅 and a vintage 5513

I might buy a gen now that the luxury market is crashing, but I will buy an Omega first.

The thing is, after some time, reps and gens evolved into two distinct categories at least for me.

I still will buy a new Rolex if I get it at retail but I no longer have any rush nor take any grief. It will come when it comes.

Reps brought me joy in watches, and a new hobby in watch modding.

I started collecting watches probably 25-30 years ago, and wandered away when other priorities took over. Back then, you could still get a secondhand Datejust or OP for well under a grand, and a GMT or Sub for $1500-$2k in very nice condition. Daytonas were nowhere near as popular as they are today, since they weren't associated with Paul Newman and Tony Soprano and didn't have a cult-following.

New gens were running about $3-5k, which was still reasonable, even counting inflation. Today, the same Sub retails for ~$10k, IF you can get one for retail from an AD...many are paying considerably more on the grey market. It's just insane. An Omega Speedmaster Moon Watch, again, secondhand, cost me ~$750 in very nice condition, with a new one going for just under $2k. Those are selling for $5-8k now. Inflation is maybe double, so the prices have definitely outpaced inflation by a fair amount.

I recently wandered back into the hobby, and what drew me here was the fear of being ripped off buying a used gen...comparing photos side by side, I really couldn't (and still largely can't, even after a LOT of reading and learning here about the flaws in various reps).

I'll still buy vintage gen watches...the ones for which there aren't any good reps, but no WAY I'd pay the current prices for a gen watch. I'd rather have a nice collection of reps than a very small handful of gens...others, obviously, feel differently.

I've still got a solid collection of gen watches, but more and more, I find myself putting on a rep when I'm heading out of the house.

The trick is to get on the waiting list, and in the meanwhile indulge yourself with buying affordable but pretty damn decent vintage reps.

My very first Rolex in the early 90s was a two-tone Datejust 36mm white dial, it cost $2k or a bit less. At that time, a 16520 costs around $4k. You can pretty much walk in any AD to buy a Rolex without a waiting list except for some rare items.

I'm on three waiting lists. I really think it's because I'm in Manhattan. It's hard to compete with guys spending $75K on jewelry when I'm not spending any money on jewelry.

Vintage sounds cool, but not my style to own multiple watches. I'm probably going to rock my Apple Watch, my gen PAM 359 and the DJ until I get lucky one day and get the call to buy a basic DJ. I intend to smack the AD in the face after purchase. My way of saying thank you lol.

Yeah it’s crazy how much the prices have gone up, especially for Rolex. I bought my first Rolex sub in 92 I think it was for $2800 new for a SS. Bought a two tone pre-owned sub a year or two later In excellent condition for $2200. Then my last new gen in 2001 a SS Daytona for $6800. I just can’t bring myself to pay the prices nowadays especially for Rolex.
