I'm sure the CEO of Rolex is moaning in agony as he reads this right now, just wailing in tears after a potential customer, who was willing to purchase a basic, blue DateJust 41mm from an AD, just lost a customer.
This is sarcasm for the inept.
The song-and-dance of getting a basic Rolex from an AD is just stupid. They are indirectly fueling the rep market because they do not care about the shady business practices of ADs.
I can wait six months. No problem. I can even wait a year. I don't mind sending the AD a text here and there to say what's up. Or pop in the store every few months to make small talk about things other than watches. But at this point, I've waited too long. It might be my zipcode (Manhattan). I'm guessing I'm not the only young buck who wants his first basic Rolex.
I already have a gen Panerai 359. And I love that watch. It has character; a tiny scratch on the lens after slamming it — hard — into a piece metal when I was in Barcelona. (As an aside, the crystal on those PAMs are indestructible). There are also other minor scuffs, but it still looks like a nice watch. People complement me on it all the time. And I love it.
But it's my every day. And I wanted something nicer to wear on dates and whatnot. So I went shopping for my first Rolex. That hasn't gone well.
And then I heard good things about reps on Reddit and found my way here. And honestly, I cannot tell the difference from some of the pics I've seen both here and on Reddit. Went through CTime, got a Clean DJ 41 in blue, just like I wanted, but got the fluted bezel and fancier bracelet (I would not have gotten this if I went to AD).
MSRP for a basic DJ is about $7800; with the bells and whistles, it's about $11K. If I wore either a DJ rep or gen around my social circle, no one would question its authenticity unless it looked really funny. So I decided to give reps a shot.
I was thinking about getting a Daytona, because I hear Clean has some of the best ones. But that might raise some eyebrows in my social circle; my AD, for instance, told me he's seen a total of 3 Daytona's in his store since he started working there. They are indeed crazy hard to come by. So if I got one, people would automatically assume I went gray market, where they go for about $25K. And I do not want raised eyebrows. As an aside, I'm sure I'll get the, "Who gives AF what people think whether your watch is rep or gen. If you're happy that's all that matters." I find you people very annoying. Everyone has a different pallet. And a lot of people don't want to wear something that looks phony. But to each their own, right?
TLDR: If the process of getting a gen Rolex was just a little easier — say, a six month wait — then I would have never come here. If I don't like what I get, oh well, a $500 lesson learned. I'm sure I can give it to my brother, who would be really happy with a quality rep.
Anyway. This is a great website. The info has been very useful. As have the older posts. And I'm thankful for it. Paid with Wise. Now I play the waiting game. Thanks.
