Rep vs. Homage: how do you decide?

I am wrestling with a homage vs rep purchase of a 183. What makes this so difficult for me is that some Reps looks so real (with swiss movt swan neck).

For me, if it is very difficult to distinguish Rep vs Gen, I might as well get the Rep. If the Rep clearly looked "fake" I would lean toward a homage. The homage is made by the same dealer and the only difference would be the words on the dial, choice of blue or black hands, and a swiss or chinese movt but no swan neck.

How do you determine if you want to go homage or Rep? I having a hard time determining which route is "more honerable" to the Paneristi...maybe neither. Maybe even the crowd you hang out with matters as well (i.e. if no one of your crowd has even heard of panerai, do you get the homage or rep?)

The very last option which I haven't proposed yet, Is get the REP and buy the homage dial for a future change or vice versa.

I know this is a very personal decision, but I am interested how you all decided one way or the other. Thanks for your time.

Hi PD! Welcome.

IMO a Paneristi would turn their nose in either case. I say get the rep. If you go to bars that charge 12 dollars for a beer, go homage if you hang with my friends who drive minivans, go Rep. :D

aloha, well as of late i have been leaning towards the homage but this also depends on who you get them from. I.E. Vacc or FLv-FLv either of these two people would be a great choice, they both make a great watch and guarantee their work, both are local to the U.S. which is great if you live here and both value their products. the problem with reps is they can be a crap shoot, the watch you pay for may not be the watch you wanted or get, mind you this does not always happen but it can, also the watch may not work, the watch may be dirty, the watch may have the wrong movement, the watch may get confiscated and so on......, like i said, it is a crap shoot.

the Homage, is a beautiful watch and not a rep. the purist may not appreciate the homage but will admire it, the enthusiast will appreciate it and desire it and remember with the homage, you get what you pay for.....
a time piece
and remember with a replica, you get what you pay for......
a piece of time

thanks all for your quick replies. I was looking at Davidsen's homage and rep if this makes a difference. He appears to be very responsive though a little cryptic, all in all his reviews look good. Sexybeast, can I have the links to the the US homage mfgrs you mentioned? I didn't see them in watch experts, but I may have missed it since I am new to the surroundings. Thanks agin
