Hey all,
So I picked up a 42mm PO a couple weeks ago from an m2m deal that had some surface scratches on the crystal. After looking around the forums and internet, I saw some articles talking about using diamond paste to polish out the scratches.
I went and bought a kit on amazon for ~$20 USD and it just came in today and I went to work. It's actually a pretty straightforward process, though if you have any AR coating on the outside of the crystal, it will be gone after the polishing.
Before any polishing, you want to tape up the bezel. I used plain old painters tape.
Here are the scratches on the crystal of my omega.
I first started out with 2.5 micron diamond paste.
I initially put a dab on the crystal itself, but in hindsight I would recommend you put it on the microfiber cloth lol. Don't really know what I was thinking here.
Anyway, I used my microfiber cloth and began polishing away on the crystal. I used a circular motion around the crystal trying to keep equal pressure on the cloth. It's kind of tiresome and I basically counted to 30 second intervals and rotated the watch a quarter turn after to make sure I could get uniform polishing. I did this for about 5 minutes.
Once I couldn't see the scratches anymore, I wiped away the 2.5 micron. This was the result:
Then I switched over to 0.25 micron paste.
I repeated the same process again using swirling motions and rotating a quarter turn every 30 seconds for another 5 minutes. Once done I finally wiped it all away. I added a dab of water to the cloth, which made it much easier to wipe the paste off.
This is the final result.
There is some very very minor scratches/scuffing at the edge of the crystal which was probably covered by the tape, and all AR is gone, but the crystal looks much cleaner now.
I'll probably get a replacement crystal at some point but I have OCD and can't stand scratches so this was a temporary fix for me.
Anyway, hope it helps.
