Someone I know has an AP diver and I'm second doubting its authenticity. At this point, i have no reason to believe otherwise, however after getting in the world of reps I am very curious to know..

Where I need to be.
Rule of thumb: Steel diver always assume it's rep even when gen

I agree and will even extend your statement to cover the FC and ceramic divers and also 15400. That’s why I don’t wear these anymore. They are the most commonly worn APs in the wild I feel and most of them are reps.

I feel the same way with rolex where i live. If i see one i asume its fake.. AP’s no one ever herd of here. So no one knows what that is here, so its pretty ”safe” to wear AP’s in my town :)

I agree. Biggest hint for me is the actual wearer though. A nice analogy about a delivery truck driver wearing an AP I read somewhere around here comes to mind.

BeeAss. IMHO.

Where I live there are "uncles" wearing flip flops and cheap cargo short who have millions in their bank and the nicest watches on their wrists

What SuperLory said about our fashion/wealth culture in Singapore is actually true.
You see sloppily dressed guys in flip flops and cheap streetwear, and with gen APs and Rolexes strapped to their wrists. A tad regrettable and visually jarring of course but undeniably true. And here we get well-dressed guys sporting reps too.

I do agree with you however that in most cases the wearer is the greatest tell. You get a sense of whether the watch fits the wearer, whatever they’re wearing. It’s just a culture thing SuperLory was describing and as a Singaporean I will have to say that his statement is totally true. But I do agree with you also that if I see an RM or AP on the UPS/DHL guy, I will think “rep” in a heartbeat instinctively.

1. What’s wrong with wearing reps?
2. Why assume the unassuming?

P.S. I know people who wear reps of the frankens they own that were in turn built as a backup option for their gens (myself included - go figure that though).

I also know professionally succesful (hehe) and (relatively) well to do people who don’t care how they dress most of the time (myself included - go figure that too :).

All in all, this topic has been discussed before at great lenghts and there’s clearly not a good answer to the rep/gen question. Is it bad to have 30-40k in reps instead of 10-20k in 1 gen? It’s a hobby after all, not a gen ownership contest, me thinks

It is only wrong to live your life following someone else's preferences. Do what makes you happy and enjoy the hobby! Atleast that's the way I've come to think regarding the great gen/rep debate.

I had this discussion with a buddy just the other day. If I were to go through the hassle to build a 1:1 replica Ferrari 250 GTO and drive it around or take it to shows. Would the fact that it is a replica really matter to anyone other than a collector who would see it solely as an investment/collection piece? I have a feeling most people would just be happy to check it out and learn about it, considering they've most likely never seen one in real life.

Now that is a 100-150k kit car compared to a 50+ million dollar collectors car. I feel this is a relatively fair comparison to our rep watch world where so long as the intention is not to fool others about your personal wealth, it is a great hobby and truly interesting to see the lengths our members can take it to.

To answer your questions T

1. There is nothing wrong with wearing reps. But personally, to me it is about not wearing something which is commonly spotted. So suppose theoretically that everyone starts spotting the new gen 15500 one fine day and the rep FC diver no longer trends. In that situation, I will be the guy who wears the rep FC diver. So it wasn't really a case of rep ostracizing, but rather, segregation by model (regardless of gen or rep status)

2. Because we are in this hobby and naturally pay more attention to the watches of others. Details, and by extension, the authenticity of that piece. One of the first things I will like to know upon seeing a nice timepiece in the wild, is whether it is gen or rep. The knowledge is for my own curiosity, and not for judgmental purposes. I think many of us are equally curious (or nosy lol) in the same way.

I have said so many times, and still feel the same: wearing a gen or rep often has nothing to do with affordability, or spending capability. Often, it is a choice made for other reasons, for example, appreciation of details not found in the rep, or for the feeling of owning the gen. Visually the reps these days generally look close in my opinion, and the tells and flaws discussed in this forum are often not practical in real life spotting. Wearing gens are not a symbol of wealth, but rather a personal choice. Many of the guys here own gens, and can afford gens, but still choose to dabble in reps because they are ok with the tells, and wisely decide that their money are better spent elsewhere. I think these guys are mostly wiser and more able than I am. ;)

Not trying to show off but I lived in Cairnhill Orchard in Singapore and all my watches are reps.

I don't think we have that many quality reps in NY, USA.. But cab drivers love Rolexes :)

P.S. Yes we have Canal street, but those reps are just bad... most of the time.
