I've bought stuff on eBay and here that have come from Italy and other EU countries, and it seems the hold up is always at the US Customs clearance step. I've had my packages sit for up to 10 days before finally moving on, and this is not just packages from Italy. Packages from China, Singapore, Australia, Italy UK, Germany, all will often take that long to clear Customs. Doesn't matter where they enter (LA/NY/etc) the delay is often just as long.
In addition, USPS has disabled some of its tracking options, so all you will see when you input the tracking number are comments like yours above, where the local mail carrier has turned the parcel over to the overseas carrier, and that's where it enters the black hole of Customs and USPS transit. You won't see it until it shows up on your doorstep, or a note gets left by your postman saying "Missed You" pick up your package at your local post office.
Best of luck and hopefully you'll have a nice surprise in your mailbox awaiting you one day soon.
