Question On Radiomir

I am considering a simple looking PAM Radiomir.

I was wondering if all the single stem manual wind movement watches with no guard have the crown stripping problems like the Black Seal? Do you have to remove the crown to wind?

Examples are PAM's 197,210, 231, 3634, 4502

I am also assuming the Lemania/ST19 models don't have this same problem. Most of those look like busier looking Chrono's anyway.

I have two radiomir pams and have had no issues with the threads stripping. Also have several vintage pams with screw in crowns and no issues as well. I have read some people have had issues with it but if I remeber corectly only 1 person.

it's also a matter of how you thread your watch when you close the crown.
I don't put the crown between my fingers and the twist it , but push it gently with my thumb on the treath and then turn my thumb.
After a few rotations i close it like you do normally.
This prevents you from winding it on the thread incorrectly.

I have 2 PAM183 and never had a problem.

regards,
Cats

Thanks guys.

It appears a lot of people had and still have problems with threads stripping, however a lot more are not. It might be luck of the draw with the manufacturing runs coming out good or bad. Most owners are really babying the winding ritual and the crowns. For anyone else interested here is a good sized thread I found over at RWG.

I guess it boils down to how much you like the style and how much mantainance you are willing to deal with.

My black seal stripped after 2 years. I am pretty gentle with it. I got a replacement crown from Davidsen which didn't fit without some modifications. I've read that Davidsen's crowns are fairly strip resistant. My watch is with Vaccuum getting a relume now. I miss it.

I cannot offer any help on the stripped threads, but I can offer another possible way to protect the threads when screwing the crown back down.

I push the crown in gently until the threads touch, then I turn the crown backward, as if I am loosening it, until I just pass the opening of the threads. You will feel the crown gently drop back toward the watch. Then gently turn the crown to tighten it. If done this way, I like Cats method too, you should keep the threads in good shape for some time.

I do find screw down crowns on manual wind watches to be counter intuitive. :?

I have no problem with either my Black seal or my California.

But if you are really worried about this issue, go for Joshua's 147. It does not have a screw-down crown. I expect that the other Radiomirs that use this case will be the same - but check with Jos. Or Andrew... they both offer this watch.

Thanks for the tip. I was aware of the Radiomir 147. It is one of the several with the Lemania movement. I was hoping to avoid both a chrono and a PAM that is only 42mm. I liked the 45mm Radiomirs because I wanted a PAM without the guard but still 44mm+. These 45mm's are great for smaller writsts.

I would really love to see a PAM that is 44mm with the Lemania movement. I can't even find a chrono Radiomir with Lemania that is 44mm.
