Question about Rolex serial numbers

Hi, apologies if this is a dumb question. When I first joined this site and looked at all the comparison pics vs gens (e.g. VSF sub rep vs. gen) I had the impression that when buying a gen Rolex second-hand one would run a risk of being sold a fake unless you could see the movement and in that case you have an immediate tell based on the balance wheel. But if I bought a used watch I'm not going to open the case so ...

Then I was thinking about serial numbers. Whether engraved on the rehaut or on the case between lugs for older watches, if there is a way to check the serial number wouldn't this be an immediate tell? I think that in a specific production run all serial numbers are identical? One of the Sub threads talks about the current Q66 batch; I think that Q66 is the first three numbers of the serial number?

Of course if they use a real serial number from on the same model watch that could be tricky. Is Rolex serial number a tell? Is there a way to easily look up serial numbers to ID reps?

IWC has a serial number lookup and it came back with 'unknown' status when I put in the serial number from my mkiii. Woul thusveork to easily identify a rep Rolex? Or is the movement the primary tell?

Yes. Everybody always asks me to take my watch off so they can check the serial number and see if the rehaut is glissening.

How likely do you think it is that you’re going to meet someone who’s memorised every fake Rolex serial number, so they can immediately call you out? I’d imagine that anyone with that level of intent will probably have other ways of spotting a fake too.

Easiest way to avoid this extraordinarily unlikely scenario? Don’t attempt to pass your rep off as gen.

i couldnt help but notice the fake serial # on the rehaut once i put on my loupe and held your arm up to my eyeball. now, please take off your watch and allow me to molest it with my gold tester gun.

or did we hear you wrong, and you're looking to get passed a pawn store clerk?

Somewhat related, I wonder if one model of rep from the same factory will all have the same serial number or are they generating random numbers for the parts?

I'm not concerned about being called out at all, rather about being sold a fake if I am buying a used gen.
Is it easy for me to check the serial number against a list or do I need to look at the movement to know it is a gen?

Ah gotcha, apologies for misinterpreting your intention.

Regarding your question. Gen serial numbers can be added to a rep case easily enough. A franken can also be built with a gen movement.

I'd rather know that the source of the watch can be trusted before I consider buying. Buy the seller, not the watch.
