PVD vs Plated vs Wrapped 18k Gold

Hi guys,

I was wondering which, in your opinion, is the most durable/accurate coating to use on a TUNGSTEN Daytona Rainbow regardless of price?

The reason I ask is JJ is offering PVD coatings in "gold" and "white gold" and I wonder if, generally, these are better than plated/wrapped over Tungsten?

From what I have read I think PVD coating is the low level and wears quickly, I can be wrong, someone else will verify.

PVD should be better unless it is of a bad quality applicaiton.

BlossomboofyBoofystewie2 possibly a noob question, but who is JJ? From what I understand PVD has no gold but can be more durable than actual plating or wrapping (thicker plating). I'll be interested in it as well. From seeing pictures most WG reps come in SS color regardless of what factories claim

I definitely want the new VSF GMT Rootbeer (when available) but I need someone to plate it after purchase or be the TD with services. I’ve spent some time here being a good noob, reading old threads and searching for plating/wrapping discussions. However, that experience has not been satisfying, so I am still trying to figure out how to get a watch plated at or post purchase.

Plating isnt all that its cracked up to be. Once a watch is plated, sweat can remove or damage the plating. Also, once the plating is damaged, it cant be replated. Well it can but you will pay more for the replating than a new watch with plating since it has to be completly sanded back down to bare metal.

Good playing shouldn’t come off with sweat.

Re-plating doesn’t require sanding an entire watch. It’s a chemical process.

To the OP's original question, PVD is the most durable, partly because it won't be actual gold - it'll likely be titanium nitride which will just look like gold. If you want proper gold, then wrapping (also known as "gold filled") is both actual gold and is also more durable than traditional gold plate on account of it being thicker. Plating is the least durable, although like gold wrap, at least it's actual gold.

So assuming you don't mind if it's actual gold or not, and are looking only at durability then it's -

PVD>Wrapped>Plated
