is it a drop in replacement to use a dd4801 or dd4802 movement instead of a 4130. I know its not ideal, but I want to try my hand at modding and i don't want to break the expensive decorated movement when its not necessary.

It is a drop in replacement. But you’ll have to change the stem since the sl4801 and dd4130 use different stems.

Gotcha. Can you advise where to buy stems and how I would know which stem to buy?
The new movement will come with a stem. You’ll just need to swap the old crown onto it and trim it to length.

You’ll want to use a pin vise to grip / hold the stem. Then just unscrew it from the plastic. You’ll want to use the same technique to free the old stem from the crown, but in that case you’ll need to break the glue that’s on the old stem threads holding it in the crown. I use a soldering iron to heat up the old stem to break down the glue before twisting the crown to unscrew it. I set my iron to 450C.

When you are securing the new stem after you’ve measured it and trimmed it to length, use blue thread locking compound to glue it in place.
