Problem with new Rolex Milguass

Purchased the new Rolex Milgauss from a trusted dealer (won't name him until issue resolved) and discovered the red sec hand moving in erratic manner, much like a skipped heart beat. It will stop for two seconds, usually between the 1 and 5 positions, then quickly jump forward to catch up. I don't doubt the dealer will replace the watch, but I'm wondering if anyone else has been having this issue and if there might be a quick (cheap watchrepair) fix. Might there be some speck of dirt in the movement? Watch otherwsie keeping excellent time.

It arrived within 5 days of ordering and in as described condtion.

Asian 21j auto.

I might be willing to live with this if I didn't think the movement would soon fail.

Sounds like the second hand may not be seated correctly and is slipping on the pin. Or the movement is messed up.
Either way send it back and wait for your replacement.
Good luck!!

All:

Thanks for feedback. Now this is interesting: timed second hand for 10 min against digital stopwatch and, despite the erratic movement, second hand neither lost nor gained time. Perfect.

Maybe I'll kept it and try to sell it as the rare "Erratic Milgauss," only a few known to exist (maybe only one!).

Any takers?

I too have the same problem with the watch I received yesterday from PWC.

It doesnt seem to be loosing time, but between 10 and 25 secs and 2nd hand is very erratic and stutter's.

Does anyone know what this could be?

See if the main spring is hung up on itself somewhere. If not, a local watchsmith may be able to fix this easily, with less hassle, time, and expense then sending it back.

There is no repair for this but the movements are not not going to die. It is a common issue.

Watch movements use a series of indirect gears to drive the hands. On Chinese made movements the tolerances are not always as tight. So what happens is there are gaps in the teeth where each gear meets. As one tooth pulls the other there is a moment that passes until the slack is taken up by the next tooth. This is not an issue when the watch is horizontal. But when on the wrist in the vertical viewing postion gravity now comes into play. So as it reaches those points you will see the slide which appears to be a stutter. But it is in fact the slack I mentioned earlier. This is why it ultimately does not affect timekeeping. It is not a terminal issue by any means. In fact it occurs on many watches with this movement. You just see it more on the Milgauss because the second hand is a funky shape. So IMO replacing the movement is not necessary.

Hi James-

I have a 21J Milgauss I picked up from WE back in February when I frist joined here. It does the same thing as you describe. However, it's still working and keeping time. I find it rather amusing to watch.

Fakemaster: Thanks much for explanation!

Fiddo: It is amusing to watch and since, as Fakemaster explained, the movement is not terminal and the watch otherwise is a great rep, I'll hang on to it.

Just tell people who have no idea about the watch that the lightning bold second hand is supposed to do that to look like lightning.

They won't have a clue either way.

Mine is the same. I think it's all down to the way in which the seconds hand is driven and its weight.

from what it sounds like, i agree.

Is this common on all 21J watches then Fakey?

of course not! if it did nobody would buy them. this looks like a common problem due to the milguass's odd second hand. i havent had a problem with any of my a21j's. granted they were all serviced by fakey... :D

i wouldnt let this discourage you from buying other a21j watches.

i dont have the "hands skipping" problem... but it isn't smooth! :(

i think it has to do with the face that, the lightning bolt seconds hand is heavier than the usual second hand, thus making it harder for the gears to churrrrrrrrn :p

thoughts?
