what is the main reason behind the difference in power reserve of a gen movt vs. rep movt?
I have a super nice asian swanneck 6497 in my 177h but the power reserve is nowhere close to the 56hrs of a genuine...
can this be optimized in some way?

A servicing would certainly help. And would be my first step. What is the PR like on your watch right now?

I think my unserviced Asian powered Angus Ultimate 111E has a PR of about 52-54 hours. I'll have to re-check it, I know it's more than 48 hrs, though. I'll do a test with my unserviced Asian powered DSN Radiomir today.

The first thing I do with my watches is check the power reserve. Just anal I guess. Every unserviced 6497 I own or have owned has averaged between 42 and 50 hours. My 111h from Angus is 50+ hours.

My Swiss 6497-1 mov'ts are all running between 48-50 hrs.
The latest Asian 6497-2 21.6kbph should run for around 56 hrs, as it reportedly now comes with an updated mainspring to replicate the gen Soprod 6497-2 as found in gen PAMs.

cheers,

Hey Guys,

Going to ride this post as i think its a good place to ask this question.

My 6497 is gettig about 30 hours :( . I have a feeling that I am just afraid to crank the crown off... but how far should i wind it? Its a DSN standard swiss movement. Do you wind until it stops? Its getting tight to turn at the point i stop but ive heard from people that they wind until it doesnt go no more.

Not sure if i should send it back or whatnot because it is quite new.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Andrew

Andrew...i cared in the beginning...wind it when you wear it.....and give it a few extra winds now and then. and it keeps running.
whenever you need to get the movement serviced ( what Vac did for mine ) i got it back with 45 hrs reserve. i just dont care so much about it....
it gets a wind when it needs it !

Andi, trust me, in 2 weeks ...it will not bother you at all. one more thing, i just try to avoid to wind it all the way. i wind it until i feel resistance building up..
just to be on the safe side.

I wind all my watches (rep and gen) until they stop. I've never had an issue, touch wood, with doing it that way.

These really aren't THAT fragile. I think you'd have to be trying to do damage to actually break anything while winding it. That's my, $.02, which isn't worth much anymore, sadly!

They're designed to be wound full way, to the max. These are tried and tested movements that have been used for pocket watches for decades, before they found their way into Panerai watches. I never ever heard of any Unitas or 6497 mov't being broken by overwinding it, because it's impossible to do so, unless you use extra force and try to ibreak it intentionally.

Well, just for giggles, I tested my gen 210 and my Asian powered DSN Cali Rad for power reserve. Surprise, surprise, they have a PR within 5 mins of each other and both lasted 57.5 hrs on a full wind.
