Poljot Strela

Generally I find most Russian watches to rather ugly with loud ostentatious ornamentation but the Strela is none of that. The Strela, which means “Arrow†in Russian, is one of the most coveted watches in the world of Russian horology. Introduced in 1959, the 3017 Strela became a legend in Soviet space history when worn on the wrist of Aleksei Leonov during the first walk in space in 1965. The original Strela featured a chronograph with a 45 minute counter and did not have a date function. Exclusively designed for the officers of the Air Force, the early Strelas were not available to the public and were constructed to strict military specifications. The 3017 movement ceased production in the late 1970s and was replaced with the current 3133 model. This is the model I recently acquired.

At 38mm Diameter this is not a large watch by modern standards but suits my sparrow wrists just fine. The 23 Jewel hand wind 3133 chronograph is a truly robust movement, based on an earlier ETA movement that the Russians purchased the manufacturing rights for. They have made a number of improvements including raising the beat to 21,600. Rate is -20 +40 seconds/day with a power reserve of 42 hrs.

The chronograph function on these movements tends to be a little stiff to get started but is much easier to stop and restart. The flyback is excellent. No signs of an initial jump when starting the chrono.

Thickness is 18mm and it's water resistant to 30m

Like all Russian watches I've seen it has a mineral glass which, while good quality, is a shame. Standard straps are awful but this one came with a S/S band which is well made but can only be adjusted in 13mm steps.

For those looking for something that stands out a bit more you might consider the 'Blue Angels' model.

Enjoy!

Beautiful watch. Thanks for the review and great pics.

Is it actually 18mm thick?? From your wrist shot It seems to hide that relative thickness very well.

Always admired this watch, that movement looks sweet.

Love it! Love it! Love it!
How old is your model? It drives me nuts that so many Russian watches started printing in English @20+ years ago. Cyrillic makes Russian watches so much more interesting.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, it does sit down well. The S/S bracelet is so frigging tight at the moment it pulls it down; I'll have to do something about that.

I also purchased a Poljot Hanhart rep last year which uses the same movement. There's a similar review back in the archives somewhere. It's one of my most worn watches. It only takes a few seconds to wind unlike PAM's which take forever with that crown guard. Not a 'look at me watch' but elegant and an interesting talking point for those that show an interest.

For anyone thinking about Russian watches I buy mine from ruscamera on eBay. He's definitely the cheapest but his communication is rather poor; you have to contact him for a tracking number. Delivery is about 20 days in reality.

It's new. Poljot was bought out by a German company and runs under the name of Poljot International now I think. You can still get this model in Cyrillic but it has a different dial style which is a little more traditional and it costs more! I have to say I really like the cream dial though.

Very dignified compared to many Russian dials, agreed. Thanks for the pictures!

Thanks Tommy Boy,
Why is it that S/S bands can only be adjusted in those huge increments? I know Rolex has that micro-adjuster or whatever they call it, but 13mm steps; give me a break. I finally resolved the problem by adding some velcro (smooth side!) to the inside of the strap and now I can type without feeling like all the circulation in my left wrist has gone.

If someone has a better suggestion then please speak up now!

Put her on a leather strap - just like her great-grandmother would have worn!

Good call, LMR. Perhaps a brown croc would be a nice touch?

Yes, I know...

I probably will. The watch came with a really do-do leather strap that I wouldn't be seen dead wearing. It's a lot worse than the pic...

For my last Poljot, a Hanhart Rep, I picked up a Stowa strap. These are really nice straps at a great price. I might do the same. $22 + $5 shipping.

Not very impressed with their other straps but these are awesome, the leather is super soft. Open to other suggestions though...

Looked around and couldn't find anything that I liked. All the 'nice' looking straps are directed towards PAM's. Strange really but what do I know?

Ordered the black Stowa, they have a strange website where you really have to search before you find their non-EU website which sells the strap without VAT. If you want an Ostrich strap they won't sell one to the US though. Didn't know Ostrich's were going extinct but I guess the US department of trade knows better!

The 44mm version is the Volmax Sturmanskie reissue. It's about twice as expensive as the Poljot version, and features a sapphire crystal:
